Care for Wild is the world's largest orphaned rhino sanctuary specialising in the rescue, rehabilitation, rewilding and protection of orphaned and injured rhinos.
It takes an immense amount of time, financial support, dedication, hard work and energy to raise rhinos. It takes even more determination, resilience and strength to successfully rewild, release and protect them.
May we always be so humble as to recognise the responsibility we have to this iconic, keystone species. We will never stop fighting for them.
Herd of 2,000 African rhinos get a last-minute purchase and rewilding ‘lifeline’ When John Hume put his 2,000 rhino up for auction in April, he didn’t receive a single bid. On Monday night, the NGO African Parks announced it would purchase the world’s largest population of privately owned white rhinos, which will be ‘rewilded’ over 10 years.
Check out that round belly! As we reported last month, Raha has finally started eating solids. This marks a wonderful — and significant — development in her healing journey.
When Raha was rescued as a days-old orphan, predators (likely jackals) had mauled her rear end, leaving her with extensive internal and external injuries. Emergency veterinary intervention rebuilt her nether regions, but the healing process came with inevitable digestive challenges. We had to tread carefully with her diet, and Raha was understandably reluctant to eat solids.
As such, we were delighted when Raha felt ready to expand her diet. Just as we hoped, she immediately started to grow bigger and stronger. While her healing journey is far from over, we are thrilled with this brave little rhino’s progress thus far.

TEAM ON STANDBY FOR NEW ARRIVAL!!
A tiny orphaned calf is in transit to TRO. The little girl, estimated only a few days old, was found on a private game reserve, following a cow and older calf this afternoon. The Team from the reserve noticed straight away that something was wrong and acted swiftly to contact dr Pierre.
We currently do not have any details on the mother as a search has been launched to find her. The baby is on an IV and we will post an update soon.
We would like to applaud the game reserve for their vigilance and keen observation. Well done to all involved 🦏
We have been waiting for the right moment to introduce you to Raha. This little rhino came to us with grievous, extensive injuries — and as always, our top priority is to focus on an orphan's welfare and healing. At last, however, we feel she is out of the most precarious stage of her recovery and ready to make her big debut. We can't wait for you to fall in love with her, too!
To do Raha’s story justice, we will be sharing it over the course of a few posts. If you can’t wait, you can read it in its entirety (and become one of her very first adopters!) on her orphan profile: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/orphans/raha
Raha’s Story — Part 1/3
In the Swahili language, Raha means joy. What better name, then, for this little rhino — joy that she survived against all odds, and joy that a precious member of Kenya’s black rhino population was saved.
On the afternoon of 23rd September 2022, Ol Pejeta Conservancy scouts reported a tiny rhino calf who was in a desperate way. She was all alone, with no other rhinos in the area. We will never know why she was abandoned at such a young age. Perhaps her mother rejected her, or perhaps she got into an altercation with another rhino and the calf was cast aside in the process.
In its prime, a rhino is one of the most formidable creatures in Africa, but a calf is terribly vulnerable to predators. In the short time she had been on her own, predators, we think jackals, had attacked Raha, mauling her and causing nasty injuries.
The SWT/KWS Mount Kenya Vet Unit rushed to the scene. They were confronted with an impossibly tiny calf, who was no more than a week old at best. The predators had done a serious number on her, adding a whole new level of urgency to her situation. She was frightened and in great distress, pain etched across her little face.
To be continued…
