Marula hosted a road safety campaign yesterday to encourage drivers to adopt better road safety practices. The festive season is one of the busiest times of the year in terms of road traffic, which unfortunately leads to a higher likelihood of accidents. Driver and pedestrian behaviour are the biggest contributing factors to accidents. Our road safety initiative focused on raising driver awareness about the risks and encouraging safer driving practices.

Health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being, and a robust and accessible health system is necessary to fulfil this right. On the 13 December 2023, Marula visited Dilokong Disability Centre with health experts for an open health talk awareness and medical examination . We believe that the health drive will give people living with disability an opportunity to know their health status. Also, by giving them the information on how they can keep themselves healthy and informed about potential health risks as well as preventative measures that they can take with regards to communicable diseases hence, they will understand the risks of certain lifestyle choices.

Ngwarati Mine walked away with the trophy, scoring 97%, while Mupfuti Mine came second with a score of 94%. The audit of 17 companies and four smelting and processing facilities took place in May 2023 and sought to demonstrate the importance of prioritising safety and continuous improvement. Zimplats CE, Alex Mhembere said, “Well done to the Ngwarati and Mupfuti teams on this excellent accolade. Your commitment to zero harm is commendable.”

An enthusiastic group of 14 students and their teacher, from École Secondaire Catholique de la Vérendrye, a French Catholic high school in Port Arthur, Thunder Bay, came to tour LDI last week. 🤩

Following a safety orientation, they were taken on a tour of the Surface Operations, Tailings Management Facility and the Mill, as well as the Maintenance Shops, including the Mobile Shops, Electrical and Hoist. After lunch, the group toured the Social House and the Gym. A BIG thank you goes out to all of the individuals and crews who helped to make the last week’s tour so engaging for the high school students. 💯

The late October tour was well-timed for students who are starting to think about their future careers. Another opportunity for them to explore job prospects is today, which is Take Your Kids To Work Day for Ontario students in Grade 9. In Ontario, it is part of the curriculum to learn about different careers.

Tell us: did your teenagers ask to come to work with you this week, or are they scouting out potential careers by shadowing someone else today? 🙌

At Impala Canada’s Lac des Iles site, an old analogue radio system, which had two different frequencies, has now been successfully replaced with one seamless system for both surface and underground teams. 💯

This upgrade in radio technology is excellent from both a safety and communications perspective. Everyone on site who uses the radios can now use the new, cutting-edge 16-channel digital system, which will mean more flexibility in channel options, radio features and better reception.

Implementing a new radio system while in full mining operation is no small feat! Everyone at site has been instrumental in maintaining constant communication while rolling out the new system, from the mobile maintenance team swapping out the radios in the haul trucks and heavy equipment between shifts, to the site services team changing out their own truck radios, to the electrical team swapping radios in vehicles when they pulled into the shop.

The upgrade to a new digital radio system is the culmination of two years of hard work and determination, and teamwork made it a very successful transition. 🙌
