STAY. .LEARNING KARATE
By definition karate suit is a type of uniform. Essentially everyone is wearing the same thing. So how do you make it your own?
**Personalization**: A karate suit can be personalized with dojo badges or embroidery, allowing you to express your name, style and affiliation. At Bushido we can embroider your dojo/association logo directly on to the suit as well as your name in Japanese or English on the collar. Alternatively a separate badge with the dojo/association can be sewn on. It is VERY important to note though that if the badge is going to be removed it should be tacked on by hand. Stitching with a machine is perfect if the badge will shyly on permanently, but machine stitching will leave stitch marks and damage the material if removed. There is no way to repair that.

With so many factors potentially affecting your choice of suit, be sure to consider them all.
**Comfort and Performance**: A well-fitting karate suit allows for optimal movement and flexibility, enabling you to perform techniques effectively and comfortably. The finish and weave of the fabric also determines the performance of the suit, so identify what you are looking for. Are you are looking for very soft and flowing suit for kumite and for cool comfortable every day training. Or do you want a suit with more structure and “snap” - particularly good for competition and grading as well as every day training. Check out the specs of each suit to make sure you are choosing the correct one for its purpose.

Let’s look a bit more at why Karate suit sizes are peculiar compared to regular clothing sizes?
**Body Proportions**: Karate suits are designed to accommodate the specific body proportions of karate practitioners. They are typically roomier in the chest and shoulders to allow for unrestricted movement during techniques.

Why are Karate suit sizes peculiar compared to regular clothing sizes?
**Traditional Origins**: Karate originated in Okinawa, Japan, where a unique system of measurement was used. This traditional sizing system has been preserved in karate suits to maintain authenticity.

Karate suit sizes can indeed seem peculiar compared to regular clothing sizes, due to a number of reasons:
Have you ever wondered why karate suits are not size graded by age or other traditional methods?
It’s simple. One size does NOT fit all!
Different manufacturers may have their own sizing because “small”, “medium” and “large” may be different from country to country, brand to brand. Similarly, sizing suits by age is not reliable - as you can see by our post photo. Both of these boys are 14 years old!
It is a better option to use the sizing chart measurements on our website to determine which size is best.
When buying a replacement suit don’t simply rely on the size of your previous suit if it is not the same brand. There is no industry standard when it comes
to karate suit sizing and while some manufacturer sizes may be similar, others may be completely different.
Our suit sizing has remained unchanged over the last 20 years however, so you can reliably use previous Bushido suits as your size reference. Rather consult our size chart using your existing suit to see what size corresponds to what you need.
We have standard and long length in a number of our suits. Long length suits have longer legs (7-10cm) and sleeves (5-7cm).
If none of our standard sizes are suitable then you can contact us to custom make a suit for you.

When choosing a karate suit it is important to identify what your requirements are so that you choose the one that best fits your purpose. Are you looking for a cheap, entry level suit? Do you want the perfect suit for competition or grading? Would you prefer a cheaper everyday suit? Let’s investigate ⬇️
8. **Performance**: each fabric is more suited to a particular purpose. So how do we choose?
While children usually start in a cheaper entry-level polycotton suit (Daimyo) we generally recommend that when children reach green and above that they consider investing in a 100% cotton heavyweight (Sh**un) or medium heavyweight suit (Saiko) when upgrading their suit. By that stage they are well committed to their training and the benefit of a good suit will be worthwhile.
We have 3 different 109% cotton suits. Each with their own characteristics. Let’s explore them further below⬇️
The Saiko (medium-heavyweight) and Sh**un (heavyweight) both give excellent “snap” and are perfect for grading and competition.
The Saiko moves and sounds like a heavyweight but is slightly lighter and may feel more comfortable for some people. This is currently our best-selling suit.
Of course some still prefer the older fashioned traditional heavyweight suit - the Sh**un. It all comes down to personal taste. Both are excellent for competition and grading as well as everyday training.
The softer Ronin is great for general everyday training in the dojo but does not give that same crisp, “snap” when punching and kicking.

So which fabric is best is the best?
1. We recommend a lightweight Daimyo for beginners, especially children. The price is much cheaper than the heavier cotton suits. This may be particularly important when buying for children who grow (rapidly!) and are not always 100% sure that they will continue for years to come.
2. Adult beginners often opt for the medium weight 100% cotto. Ronin as it is just a bit thicker. It is softer so more suited to everyday training and those not focussed on grading or competing. It is lighter than medium-heavyweight and heavyweight suits but is still excellent fabric and a bit cheaper.
3. Saiko and Sh**un suits are the top of the range and are more costly as they are 100% cotton. However their durability will ensure years of use. They are particularly suited for competition and grading.
Should price be a consideration when choosing a suit? Of course! More than the actual price, value-for-money is a factor you should consider. You don’t have to pay exorbitant prices for imported suits to get excellent quality. World class suits are available right here in South Africa - and 100% locally made. They are comparable to any imported suit.
But what DOES determine the price of a suit? And how do you choose the right one? Our next instalment of “Choosing a suit” will guide you in this⬇️.
7. **Price**: Price may also determine how you choose a karate suit.
A) The biggest factor in suit pricing is the fabric. Polycotton is cheaper but 100% cotton is the favoured fabric for seniors, instructors and black belts - but is more costly. This directly affects price as that is what primarily determines the price. Suits can require up to 4m of fabric for an adult sized suit! However it is durable and lasts for years, so sized correctly it can be considered an investment. A good suit will last years so ultimately it works out cheaper than the apparel and equipment for many other sports. (Anyone paid for a pair of running shoes recently?🤪)
😎 The second factor is quality of sewing - a good seamstress or tailor will ensure a good quality final garment.
C) Good quality stitching thread, of appropriate strength, is also important.
Of course good quality materials cost more than the cheaper lower quality alternatives. All these costs directly impact on the cost of a suit but also give a longer lasting, better looking karate suit.

So what are the biggest mistakes we make and how do you keep that bright “whiteness” of a new suit? Listen up and we’ll tell you. ⬇️
6. **Color**: White is the traditional color for karate suits (although other colours can also be manufactured to your requirements). So how do we keep them “super-white”?
1. Correct washing methods are important to maintain the “whiteness” of 100% cotton suits. Poly cotton suits generally maintain their colour due to them being from man-made fabric. 100% cotton fabric comes off the loom naturally in an off-white state. It is then dyed “super-white” for us and pre-shrunk. This of course means that bleach is THE ENEMY of your white suit! It just bleaches out the white dye and you are left with a greyish off-white colour. Instead, it is important to use the correct dosage of washing powder as recommended by the powder manufacturer. Never under-dose.
2. The next BIG no-no is fabric softener. It also causes greying of the suit. The fine weave of our suits creates that nice “snap” on our medium and heavyweight suits but it also ensures maximum comfort - so fabric softener is not required - nor desired.
3. The BIGGEST no-no of all??? Vanish stain remover. It does remove stains but NEVER let it dry on the suit or you will end up with a dark yellow mark that will NEVER come out.

As we can see there are a lot a factors to consider when buying a suit. Now. Let’s talk about shrinkage. It’s real. And here is why ⬇️
5. **Shrinkage**: 100% cotton suits shrink after washing. The shrinkage rate is dependant on how much the original fabric was pre-shrunk before manufacture and how you wash and dry the garment. Following washing instructions is very important - cold or cool wash (30-40 degrees) and air dry. Our fabric is pre-shrunk when it is milled but still has a shrinkage of 8-10% in the length (within the SABS approved ratings). We therefore cut extra length on each suit to allow for this shrinkage. This ensures that the garment is a suitable length after the shrinkage is complete (usually 5-6 washes) The shrinkage width-ways is only around 2% and therefore negligible and not even noticeable.

Does the weight of the suit REALLY make a difference when “Choosing the right karate suit” ? Oh yes - you’d better believe it! Here are some more key features to consider
3. **Weight**: Karate suits are typically classified into three weight categories: lightweight (Daimyo - 225g), medium weight (Ronin - 275g), and heavyweight (Sh**un - 410g). We also offer a medium-heavyweight (Saiko - 350g). The ideal weight depends on your climate, personal preference, and the level of protection you need.

It’s Q&A time!
Question 14:
ARE YOUR SUITS ONLY AVAILABLE IN WHITE?
Our Ronin (mediumweight), Saiko (medium-heavyweight) and Sh**un (heavyweight) are only available in white. Daimyo (lightweight) suits are available in white and black but can be made in pretty much any colour you want!

In the second part of our “Choosing the right karate suit” guide here are some key features to consider:
2. **Weave**: The weave of the fabric determines the suit's weight and durability. The thread count is very important to the finish of the final
garment. The lower the thread count the less flexible the fabric will be resulting in the “suit of armour” feel of some other suits. Those need to be washed hundreds of times to become comfortable - and who has time for that! Much like a chunky gold necklace compared to one with finer links, the finer weave has a better feel. The finer weave of our fabrics gives more flexibility and comfort and as the weight per metre (gsm) is the same as other “canvas” type fabric, it is just as durable.

Choosing the right karate suit is essential for comfort, performance, and safety. Here are some key features to consider:
1. **Material**: Traditional karate suits are made from 100% cotton, which is breathable, durable, and comfortable. However, modern suits may blend cotton with other materials like polyester which is cheaper to produce. Our lightweight Daimyo suits are polycotton but the Ronin, Sh**un and Saiko suits are all 100% cotton that is milled especially for us.
