How much sugar is packed into your favourite chocolate bars 13/09/2021

Divide the amount of total sugar per bar by 5.
1 teaspoon of sugar is = 5g.
Example: Barone has a total sugar of 35.2g per bar; 35.2 / 5G = +- 7 teaspoons of sugar 😩🀭
Rather opt for a wonderbar, chomp or even a lunchbar as a treat now and then 🍫

How much sugar is packed into your favourite chocolate bars Most people love chocolate for a host of different reasons, it tastes great, it gives us energy, and makes us feel good, even if only for a brief period. More than not, we eat it because we are trying to kill a sugar craving.

Let's talk introducing food allergens to babies. πŸ₯šπŸ₯œπŸŸThis is a topic that can understandably be a little confusing for parents. It wasn't that long ago that the advice was to avoid all of the big allergens until after your baby was 1.

Well if you haven't heard, that is no longer the case! There have been multiple studies that now show that the way to prevent more allergies is actually to introduce the allergen early and often. That means for babies not at high risk starting right at 6 months when you introduce other solids. If you do have a high risk baby (immediate family member with a food allergy, severe eczema, or previously diagnosed food allergy) then sometimes the recommendation is to actually start them even earlier than that with the allergens! It is no longer considered appropriate to delay allergen introduction!

So if you are worried about introducing allergens because you don't want your baby to develop a food allergy, know that they best way to prevent them is to actually introduce the food. From peanuts, to fish, as well as the entirety of the egg. Introduce them, and incorporate them as often as you can!

Keep in mind that this doesn't mean your baby can't develop a food allergy even with early introduction. This will help to prevent babies who might have had an allergy if they weren't introduced to the food from developing the allergy, but there are some babies who will have an allergy regardless. For more information on this, speak to your doctor or allergist, or you can head to my blog post on the topic where I've got some more detailed information! (Clickable link in profile)

DIET OR EXERCISE? WHICH ONE IS MORE IMPORTANT?

Diet of course!! What you choose to fuel your body with is the single biggest determining factor of whether you will loose weight or not. This also determines if you are at risk of developing Diabetes, Hypertension or even high cholesterol.

Many people think that they can out exercise a BAD DIET.. so we've compiled a list of some commonly eaten foods just to show you how difficult that would be to burn the calories off..

Mc Donald's Big Mac Burger = 52 min of running
Medium Coke = 21 min of running
Mc Donald's Medium Fries = 30 min of running

THAT'S A TOTAL OF 103 MIN OF RUNNING!!

So see how it would be easier to just make wiser food choices..

Exercise obviously speeds up weight loss as it increases your energy expenditure, but if you think that you can eat what you want and you'll just exercise it off.. then you are definitely in for many hours of running!!

A cold front has hit Gauteng and we are all craving something nice and warm this winter.. However a normal Hot Chocolate tends to be loaded with extra sugar and calories and doesn't help us to lose our lock down weight.

So why not ditch the high energy hot drinks and try the NOMU SKINNY HOT CHOCOLATE instead. Its Low GI, Diabetic friendly and uses sweetener instead of sugar. Make it with low fat or fat free milk to enjoy a guilt free snack.

If you would like to make your own version mix 1 cup low fat milk (warmed up) with 1 tsp cocoa powder and 1 packet of sweetener of your choice together to achieve a similar result.

PORTION SIZES ARE THE KEY TO HEALTHY EATING

If you follow this easy model for lunch and supper then you can ensure that you don't overeat.

1/4 PLATE should be filled with LOW GI starches (such as brown rice, pasta, pap etc.)
1/4 PLATE should be filled with LEAN PROTEINS (remember to cut off visible fat and remove the skin from chicken)
1/2 PLATE should be loaded with NON STARCHY VEGETABLES (note that vegetables help to keep you full and can be fresh or frozen)

This coming week, try to follow these portion sizes and see how your health improves.

AM I HUNGRY.. OR AM I FEELING?

Stress eating is a normal problem that many of us face on a daily basis -especially in the midst of this COVID pandemic. Stress can have a detrimental effect on our food choices, leading us to increase our intake of sugary or fatty foods (commonly known as comfort foods) as a type of coping mechanism.

This may be due to the high levels of cortisol produced due to stress, in combination with higher than normal insulin levels, plus the learned habit that "every time I feel bad then I should eat something to make myself feel better.. "

But does the comfort food really make you feel better?
Perhaps for those first few minutes until you realise that you've eaten everything in the fridge and can't take it back!

You need to learn to manage stress eating by following the next few tips:

ESTABLISH A WHY?
Identify your stress triggers and be mindful of them.

REALIZE THAT YOU ARE NOT ALONE
Stress eating is in response to emotions, not physical hunger. And you are not the only one who deals with your emotions by eating.

REMOVE UNHEALTHY SNACKS FROM THE HOUSE
If it's not in the house.. then how are you going to eat it? Make sure that you don't tempt yourself by having easily accessible comfort foods around.

GET YOUR MIND OFF OF IT
Try taking a walk or calling a friend and speaking about it, instead of speaking to your food.

If you need more help with emotional eating give us a call!

Your body only has limited ways to tell you that something is wrong with your gut!

If you are experiencing GIT issues then it could be something that you are eating or should start eating to alleviate these symptoms.

If you need help getting your GUT feeling better again then give us a call, and one of our experienced dietitians can help you to feel YOU again!

We often get asked.. which fruits can I eat?

The answer is ANY OF THEM!! Fruits are very good for you as they contain vitamins, phytonutrients and fiber and make for a healthy snack that can fit into any balanced diet.

However, remember all in moderation.. Just because something is beneficial to your health, doesn't mean that you can eat 5 at a time. Aim for to 2-3 fruits per day and not more than 1 fruit at a time. One fruit is equal to 1 medium pear, apple, banana, orange or peach or 1 measuring cup full.
