4 ways to personalise your home.

Here are our top tips to apply when accessorising your home.

1. Add texture
One way to make sure your space is far from boring is to have a mix of textures and materials. This creates depth, adds contrast and personality to the room, which makes it far more interesting to look at. Having a wide range of materials and fabric types, bringing in objects in a range of different sizes and using various colours all add interest to a room. Also try using different throws, having vases in different shapes and sizes and a range of different candles.

2. Be colour conscious
We always say that you shouldn’t be afraid of using colour — whether it’s on the wall, your couches or chairs, a rug or in a number of your décor accessories. Just be sure that you pick the right colours. We suggest using a maximum of four complementary colours — and various shades thereof, together with your neutral bases.

3. Create added space
Using your décor accessories smartly should not only give a room character, but should also make the most out of the actual space. Lights and mirrors — when used correctly — create the illusion of more space. The easiest trick is to place your mirrors opposite a window or door to reflect open spaces and light, which makes your room look bigger. Bringing in extra lamps, light reflective décor items and light-up objects will also add light, making the room look larger.

4. Finishing touches
Much like a statement necklace completing an outfit, it’s those last little elements and final touches that you put in a room that can just bring it all together. Use artwork or even a clock, a focal wall — which can be wall papered, painted a bright or different colour, or covered in a different material to the other walls — or even a great plant to complete your space.

Here are ‘off-the-wall’ ways to benefit from the mirror effect …

We all know that mirrors help reflect light and add depth, making a space appear bigger and brighter. However, you don’t have to line walls with mirrors to boost the natural light in your home.
Here are a few different ways to use mirrors in your home…
• Mirrored frames – Add sparkle to a gallery wall by framing art and photos in mirror picture frames.
• Mirrored trays – Mirrored pieces are popular in event design, so why not bring the look home? During the day, a round mirrored tray on a dining table will help make a dining area appear lighter and, during a special occasion it will reflect the centrepiece – be it a flower arrangement or candelabra – making it look all the more impressive.
• Mirrored vases and ornaments – Don’t underestimate the effect seemingly insignificant mirror-finished objects can have in your home.
• Mirrored furniture – Mirrored front cabinets and dressers are utterly elegant but, if this idea makes you nervous, you could also opt for a metallic finish. It has that reflective quality but is child-friendly and far more durable.

May is Energy Month! It’s easier than you think to save electricity around your house!

Water Heating
With winter approaching, we are likely to use more hot water, but there are savings to be made too!
• Always wash with cold water - your laundry detergent works just as well. If you have to use hot water for your laundry, make sure you are washing a full load.
• Shorten your shower times and install water saving showerheads to reduce your hot water usage.
• Install a solar water heater to save energy by using solar power.
• Set your geyser to between 55°C to 60°C. This will save electricity while keeping water hot enough for showers and cleaning dishes.
• Install a geyser blanket to retain heat.

Appliances
• Choose energy-efficient appliances. They don’t just save you money – they’re good for the environment because they use less energy.
• Use microwaves and toaster ovens to cook or warm leftovers.
• Defrost food in your fridge overnight, rather than use your microwave.
• Don’t open your fridge door unnecessarily and make sure the seal is intact
• Let hot food cool down before placing in your fridge
• Keep your freezer full – it uses less energy. For maximum savings, consider filling your freezer with containers of water.
• Use your dishwasher on economy mode to use less water and electricity.
• Turn off your dishwasher after the wash cycle and let your dishes air-dry.
• Keep the oven door closed while cooking.
• Turn your oven or stove plate off when food is almost ready and let the existing heat finish the cooking for you.
• Use tight-fitting lids on pots and pans when cooking to shorten your cooking time and save energy, or use a pressure cooker when preparing food that takes a long time to heat.
• Match your pot size to the stove plate. Heat is lost when small pots are used on large plates.
• It is more economical to boil water in a kettle than on the stove.

Gardening tip: How to pamper your poppies.

One of the most favoured poppies for modern day gardens are Iceland Poppies. Standing approximately 30cm high when fully grown, their appeal for brightening that one, mainly green flower bed is palpable. They can either be planted in groups or as borders and are the perfect complement to other spring annuals. When buying poppy seedlings, don’t fret if there aren’t in flower yet, it just means you’ve arrived early enough to ensure a long blooming good show. It’s best to get them in the ground as early in the season as possible if you’d like a showy display right through into spring. Since poppies need a home where they bask in the winter sun, preferably all day, but are not fans of heat, try to keep them away from heat reflecting walls.

Poppies are incredibly rewarding but need a little TLC until they have found their feet in their new home. Plant your seedlings about 15cm apart and try not to plant them too deep. Using the seedling tray they came in will assist in judging this depth correctly. Watering the seedling tray before transplanting them will go a long way to making sure they don’t feel unnecessarily disturbed, as they can be lifted out and replanted with the tray soil still intact.

Water your poppies frequently until they’ve established themselves and are firmly rooted in their new home. Once they start blooming, remember to deadhead the spent flowers regularly to keep them coming or, even better, take cut flowers and fill your vases as often as you like. If you don’t, they’ll quite possibly go to seed earlier than necessary and your flower production will stop as swiftly and unapologetically as it started. So, if you love to have a house full of blooms straight from your garden, just pop into your local garden centre and pick up some poppies. Your garden will also be brighter for it.

May is Energy Month! We will be focusing on how you can save electricity around your home. It’s easier than you think!

Heating
Now is the best time to start preparing your home for the approaching winter.
• Use the sun to heat your home. Leave your curtains or blinds open during the daytime.
• Hang thick curtains over your windows to stop heat escaping.
• Cover all bare floors. Carpeting or rugs add to comfort and heat retention.
• Limit your use of portable heaters. Rather investigate options such as energy efficient wall panel heaters
• Run your ceiling fans on a low setting in a clockwise direction during winter. This creates an updraft that sends the warmer air pooled near the ceiling back into the living space – cutting heating costs by as much as 10%.
• Electric blankets are great! Use your electric blanket to heat your bed for about an hour before sleeping and you won’t need to use an energy-draining heater for the whole night.

Lighting
We all need to light our homes, but do you know just how easy it is to save energy while doing so?
• Switch off lights in rooms that aren’t being used. This may sound like common sense, but you will be amazed at how many homes waste electricity by lighting empty rooms!
• Replace standard bulbs with CFLs. Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs are more energy-efficient than regular light bulbs, while giving off the same amount of light.
• Make the best use of the light emitted from your light bulbs by selecting light-coloured lamp shades. Place lamps in corners so they reflect light from two walls.
• Use fewer bulbs in your home by opting for bulbs of a higher wattage. For instance, one 100 watt bulb produces the same light as two 60 watt bulbs.
• Use motion-detector lights for all your outdoor lighting. These turn on only when movement is detected and turn off automatically. This feature not only helps with security, but saves you electricity as you won’t be running your lights all night.

A beautiful kitchen can make a home 🏠

Expert kitchen design tips

A kitchen is the heart of the home, but creating that perfect space requires a few magic touches. Megan Bond from OBJEK (Architecture and Interiors) shared some tips that will ensure your kitchen exudes that stylish and sophisticated look.
“When designing your kitchen, you need to make sure of three things – your space needs to be functional, of good quality and should have the right lighting. Incorporating these three elements ensures that you not only have a stylish space but that it also promotes maximum efficiency,” Bond suggests.

Neutral basics
When one thinks 'functionality', it doesn’t sound all that fun or trendy. However, focusing on function first, and keeping the design simple, allows you to explore different trends.
A neutral colour palette isn’t boring because it allows you to have fun with other trendy kitchen finishes.

Dare to be bold
Bond recommends being daring with your walls and worktops. “You could paint your walls a bold colour if you want to make more of a statement. Playing with interesting materials, colours and textures in splashbacks and worktops will give your kitchen more character.”

Modern and urban chic
In a male or couple’s kitchen, you may want to give the space a modern, urban chic and subtly masculine look.
To get the look, use a darker palette streamlined with a touch of stainless steel.
“I say, avoid awkward and unnecessary corners. Let your kitchen breathe a little and don’t go overboard with the storage on the walls,” advises Bond.

Lighting up
It’s the thing that let’s everyone see your kitchen in all its glory – lighting.
When considering light solutions, a balance of task and ambient lighting should be the most important element. Besides needing to see what you are doing in the kitchen, lighting creates a warm atmosphere.

6 interior decorating myths you can officially ignore!

When it comes to decorating, we’re often too scared to do anything in case we get it ‘wrong’. Well, here’s the good news: despite what you’ve heard, there is no wrong! Here are some interior decorating myths you can totally ignore…

1. Your ceilings should be white.
A colourful ceiling does not automatically shrink a room. In fact, it gives it a fabulously chic element, and can add quite the ‘wow’ factor. Don’t get us wrong, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with a white ceiling, but it’s not your only option.

2. Don’t mix patterns and prints…
…or stick to a maximum of three. These days it’s all about clashing. Big, small, loud or muted — it’s your space and this is the perfect way to let your personality shine through. If YOU like it, it will ‘go’.

3. Your furniture should go against your walls.
These days more houses have open plan living areas, so this can be impossible. Place your furniture in a way that works for you without being limited by the walls. Create cosy little nooks, separate areas with a fabulous ‘floating’ sideboard and make walkways where you think it makes sense.

4. Small rooms must be painted in a light colour.
Having a darker or richer colour on the wall will create warmth, dimension and texture! Be smart with your furniture choices, add a mirror or two, and you’ll leave your room feeling cosy, trendy and oh-so glam.

5. Chairs should come in a set.
Buying second hand chairs or revamping some inherited ones can cost next to nothing. More than this, it looks fab! Mix fabrics, textures, shapes or colours… or mix everything!

6. Your scatter cushions should be used in odd numbers.
Whether you want to use 2 or 20, have them on your couch, chair, bed or floor, want the same size or a mix of sizes, you simply can’t go wrong. Scatter cushions should be seen as the perfect, easy way to accessorise a room and inject some fun, glamour and personality into it.

Flowerbeds Fit for Wonderland.

If you’ve watched Alice in Wonderland, whenever you see violas or snapdragons, surely you’re reminded of the colourful chorus when all the flowers come to life to serenade Alice! And who can resist squishing the ‘cheeks’ of a snapdragon to make it ‘sing’?! The striking appearances of these animated blossoms make them a wonderful edging or border plant combo. Both plants thrive in cooler temperatures, tolerating frost rather than extreme heat, making them a perfect autumn or spring companion.

Violas prefer to peep their pretty ‘faces’ out of more shady spots, so they will love being in the shade provided by the loftier snaps. They are herbaceous yet hardy annuals and mature at a height and width of about 15cm. Plant your seedlings about 20cm apart. Water thoroughly about once a week, depending on rainfall. Care: Off with their heads! Well, dead ones anyway; allowing them to focus their energy on creating new blooms. Violas prefer soil rich in organic matter with plenty of leaf-mould or well-rotted manure, so compost before planting.

When pairing these two, opt for the medium to tall varieties of snaps in order to shade the shorter violas, as snaps prefer being planted in full sun. Snaps range in height from the dwarf varieties of 15cm up to the loftiest snaps of 120cm. Plant the green plants without blooms, allowing the plants to develop stronger roots before expending their energy on creating their intricate blooms. Find a balanced watering regime as snaps enjoy moist but not water logged soil. Don’t plant them too close together as they like a fair amount of air flowing around them, all the better to show off those multi-bloom stems.

Create a hotel-style bed at home.

We’re going to let you in on the secrets of creating a bed of hotel standards, so that you can create the look in your own bedroom. You’ll never want to get out of bed again!

A good mattress
Start with a quality mattress. The most popular choices on the market are innerspring and memory foam. Add an extra layer of luxury and comfort with a mattress topper. These fit over your mattress and have the added benefit of protecting your mattress against spills and stains. If you have the money to spend, pick a topper that’s stuffed with duck down.

Night frill
Night frills are notorious for being fussy, but if it’s the hotel look you’re after, you have to add it. If you simply cannot see yourself struggling with a night frill every morning, however, invest in a bed with a faux suede base. It’s no mess, no fuss luxury.

High quality linen
The only choice you really have is cotton and it has to have a high thread count. If you feel like splashing out, spend your money on Egyptian cotton, regarded by some as the finest linen one can find.

Plush duvets and pillows
Think about those duvets you just want to sink into … this is the type of duvet you want to go for. You want to ideally choose a duck or goose down filling. For your pillows, think ultimate comfort as well. Whether you choose a foam or feather inner will depend on your sleeping habits.

Blankets and throws
Once your duvet and pillows are on your bed, you can move on to choosing a blanket or throw to go with the set. The blanket or throw becomes more than just a way to keep warm – it transforms into a decorative focal point.

An assortment of cushions
The finishing touch is artfully arranged cushions. Mix up shapes and sizes to keep things interesting. Play with reflective elements, like sequins in summer; add warmer textures, like faux fur, in winter.

Design tips for those ‘third’ spaces

Moving into an apartment could mean that you only have the expected rooms found on a floor-plan; none of the luxuries or designer extras that make a house a home like a scullery or reading nook, or what property developer Blok calls Third Spaces. So, how can you transform passive spaces into functional ones?

First things first, identify your space:
Look for dead corners or areas that take up a lot of floor space but serve only one function. Often circulation areas such as entrance lobbies, passages and staircase landings (usually only used to get you from space A to B) could easily be used for another purpose as well.

Be creative:
No matter the size or shape of your space, all you need is a little creativity or imagination. There are a number of ways you can use empty spaces. You can turn them into a study, bar, daybed or reading area; the possibilities stretch as far as your creativity allows.

Nothing is unifunctional:
People are not as set on hiding personal items away anymore and are instead celebrating them in the home. For example, hanging your bicycle in your entrance lobby, almost as a piece of art instead of trying to hide it away in a room, is definitely a clever use of some third space.

Overlapping or layering is key:
Overlapping or layering the functions of spaces is key. Keep things simple. The simpler the design, the more functions you can apply to it. However, the simpler the design, the more thought you should put into it. An example is turning the unused space under the stairs into a bar area, thus creating an entirely new space that did not exist previously.

So in the end, if it serves its original purpose and other functions while simultaneously adding to the character and design aesthetic of the greater home – you have a winner.

5 home décor tips that won’t break the bank

Whether you’re feeling particularly inspired or just think that the look of your home doesn't quite match your taste any more, here are 5 home décor tips to update your home without breaking the bank.

1. Raise your curtains to the ceiling. You won’t believe the difference it will make to your room. Not only is it a great way to create drama, but it actually makes your windows look much bigger. Plus, it’s a great way to show off your curtains. So go bold and bright!

2. Plump up your scatter cushions, especially the ones on your couches. After a while, your cushions tend to lose their fullness after being sat on and leaned against, and they start to look a little drab. Avoid those little “dog ears” on your cushions by buying a decent inner, and get a size bigger than the cover. If your scatter cushion is 50cm by 50cm, try getting a 55cm by 55cm inner — you won’t believe the difference it will make!

3. Update your shelving. Wallpaper and paint aren’t only for your walls; they can give new life to your shelves, cabinets and even your book cases. Whether you paint the entire unit or wallpaper just the back, the options are endless.

4. Invest in some wicker baskets for storage — they’re super economical, look fab around rooms and are very useful. Best of all, they hide clutter! They can store anything from magazines to blankets to toys, and come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. We suggest getting a variety for added effect — storage never looked so chic.

5. Any item can be used as décor. Have a beautiful pot, an old-school kitchen scale or your great grandmother’s suitcases? Don’t put them in a cupboard to be forgotten about; place them out where they can be seen and appreciated, and let the compliments roll in.

3 Small home hacks for the living room

If you’re looking for ways to make the most of every inch of your living room, here are small home hacks that work.

Living in a small home comes with some serious benefits – like lower rent or bond repayments and quick and easy cleaning. However, the drawback of living in a small abode is that sometimes it feels like you’re running out of space, particularly in the living room. Fortunately, there are a few ways you can work around this

1. Take the raise
Give your home a lift by raising furniture off the ground. You can buy or make wooden feet for sofas and beds to lift them off the floor. This not only helps make a space feel airier by allowing natural light to shine underneath items, but it could also provide you with a sneaky storage space. Simply add caster wheels to wooden boxes or drawers, which you can slide under a sofa and you’ll have storage for magazines and DVDs.

2. Chair down
In a small living room, occasional chairs can make the space feel cramped. The solution is simple – sell them and buy space-saving ottomans. Look for ones that double up in function by offering storage space. Not only will you have a place to put your feet up, but ottomans work well as seats for guests and can even be used as a coffee table if you place a tray on top.

3. Talking about tables
If ottomans can double up as coffee tables, you can free up even more space by getting rid of the coffee table in your lounge. Yes, a large coffee table is lovely but, when you take it away, you increase the flow in a small living room which makes it seem roomier than it really is. You could even replace the coffee table with a shelf mounted behind the sofa, or wooden trays that fit over the arms of the sofa.

Garden Care in March - March is maintenance month!

As summer draws to a close, you can cut down on the amount of water you give your plants. It is good practice to adjust the settings on your automated irrigation systems too. Keep an eye on the weather though, if the hot and dry weather persists into autumn, water containers and hanging baskets every day and keep up with the garden watering. Pay special attention to plants like camellias, azaleas and hydrangeas as they won't flower next season if they get too dry.

When it comes to your lawn, do not neglect it now seeing as the cooler days are setting in. Over-sowing your lawn in autumn is highly recommended on existing seed lawns, as it will ensure lawns remain thick and luscious all year round.
If you have clay soil in your garden, be sure to add plenty of organic material into the soil this month.

It’s a good time to start your compost heap to be ready for replacing nutrients in the soil in autumn. Use a commercially available compost bin or make your own and use a variety of materials and vegetable waste.

March is the beginning of autumn and the correct time to spray, using herbicides, for w**ds etc. During this time of year, active transport in plants would be downward to store energy for the longer winter months and therefore chemicals would reach the roots to ensure effective control of w**ds for the next spring season. Keep w**ding regularly or use systemic w**d killers on perennial w**ds.

This is your last chance to get a good burst of growth before the winter, so feed your shrubs and trees this month – prune them to shape first if they’re getting leggy or woody. Assess your lawn for areas that might have been damaged during the busy summer months in the garden. You might need to replant or revive them with an early autumn dose of fertiliser.

How to clean stainless steel
Stainless steel appliances look stunning in a modern or contemporary kitchen. Their sleek lines add style and elegance to even the smallest kitchen. The only downside of stainless steel is that it tends to show every little bit of grime and grease.

While stainless steel does not stain easily, it's best to clean up spills and marks as quickly as possible. It may still be possible to remove a stain after it sets, but it definitely will require more work and potentially damaging or scratching cleaners. Keep your stainless steel looking good with these suggestions.

High shine
Remove heavy marks with cream cleaner or a mixture of bicarbonate of soda and water paste. To avoid scratching the surface of stainless steel, never use abrasive cleaners that will damage and dull the surface. Always clean stainless steel with the grain and never scrub in a circular pattern.

Hard water
Discolouration and most marks on stainless steel are caused by water-borne deposits clinging to the surface. Remove lime scale and hard water stains with vinegar or lemon juice. Apply the mixture to the area to be cleaned and gently rub with a cloth. One of the best ways to keep your stainless steel sink in pristine condition is to clean it with Inox Crème, which can be used daily.

Easy maintenance
To bring out the shine on a stainless steel sink, generously sprinkle either table salt or baking soda into the sink and then use the cut end of half a fresh lemon as a pad. Rinse with hot water and the sink will gleam!

To keep stainless steel appliances looking good, a solution of warm water with a teaspoon of vinegar will take care of grime. Use a microfibre cloth to wipe stainless steel surfaces.
