Summer Pests - Do you this box?

Ticks are actually active year round, but humans tend to enjoy the outdoors a lot more in summer so your chances of coming home with one of these critters goes up proportionally.

They are incredible creatures. They live near the ground but when they sense the vibratory movement of an approaching animal they crawl to the top of grass stalk to wait for the passer-by. In a spiderman/ mission impossible type manouver, they hold the stalk with their back legs and latch with their front legs as their prey brushes past.

As true vampires, they feed on blood. Ticks have a barbed beak called a Hypostome. A tick sticks its Hypostome into you when it bites and the tick secretes an anesthetic (a pain reliever) and an anticoagulant (a substance that stops the blood from clotting) to keep from being noticed.

is caused by a bacteria transmitted by the tick but this can only occur 24 - 48 hours into feeding on the host. Quick removal of any tick is your best defence against any tick-borne disease.

Regular pet grooming is essential to keep your household tick-free. If you do venture outdoors to enjoy the summer, wear light clothing to easily spot a tick as it climbs your clothing for a suitable nesting spot. Ticks like damp, moist areas of the skin such as the inner thighs, waist fold or even hidden in the hair of your scalp. Check your person thoroughly and remove any interloper as quickly as possible.

WHY are there so many more as summer approaches??

Spiders breathe using a multiple flap system of gill-like ‘book lungs’ which, if they become wetted, are more liable to suffocation than the more flexible arrangement of internal gas-exchange tubes (trachea) used by insects.

🕷When it rains (as it does in our ) spiders, by necessity, will seek shelter in the dry of your home or business.
🕸These carnivores are also super predators - and like all predators, will follow a source of food. If your environment attracts fleas, flies, mosquitos and other yummy bugs... you will definitely have spiders too!
💞Summer is the season of LOOOVE! Male spiders will leave the hidden hidey holes of their normal habitat to find a suitable mate.

You WILL be surprised at how many spiders are lurking within a 5m radius of you right now...but few spiders are actually harmful to humans. Mostly, they will munch on mozzies and support a pest free home for you.

However, if spiders DO give you the heebie-jeebies then CLEANING house is the best thing you can do to discourage them. Vaccuum and dust all those dark and gloomy areas of your home: under the bed, behind the couch, behind the door frames etc.

What can you do about a cockroach infestation?

Cockroaches are pretty amazing creatures: in a colony of THOUSANDS, siblings will never mate with each other. They will, however, EAT the carcass of a fallen comrade. By choice, not necessity. A 40 day fast is quite doable for a cockroach. Yes, they can survive 40 days without food.

Talking about snacking... a headless cockroach will continue to live for a week post decapitation!

So how do you manage your cockroach problem? Cleanliness and hygiene are crucial to discourage any would-be house guests. Wipe the counter tops, wash the dishes before bed each night and be a little OCD regarding crumbs and spills around stove and referigerator.

If you DO find yourself home to a colony of cockroaches, that canabalistic quirk is an opportunity!
Cockroach baits encourages the pests to ingest slow acting poison. The infected will return to the nest where he/she will eventually expire - allowing the rest of the 'intrusion' (the group name for cockroaches) to feast on their fallen comrade - poison and all!

Summer Pests...are you ready for the headache?

Ants are more active and reproduce in the summer months. The 'explosion' of ants as the weather warms has much to do with the expansion of their colonies! Ants are known to create enormous subterranean cities.

Ants are opportunistic by nature and can make a nest just about anywhere depending on the species of ant. When inspecting for ants outdoors you should look:
🐜In firewood piles and logs
🐜Under yard debris
🐜In electrical and utility boxes
🐜In dirt mounds in the yard
🐜In cracks and crevices of your walls, window sills, patio etc.

How to manage ants?
Prevention is always best. Ants like dry, arid areas so if you have a lush lawn and ground cover in your flower beds, you discourage ants.
Ants are attracted to food sources and water so keeping a clean kitchen and staying on top of your teenager's snack stash under the bed goes a long way to keep them out!

The relative peace of winter is gone. The dreaded scurge of summer is coming. FLIES!🪰🪰

Flies are poikilothermic – meaning cold-blooded – and need heat to warm up their muscles for flight.

Female flies have a keen sense of smell and can sense a rotting carcass or full dumpster from several kilometers away! The female needs to find a decent source of food for her 400 or so maggots she births. The male is less picky, and will touch down on any food source you leave uncovered for more than a minute: sandwich, cookie, Sunday roast... he is simply out for a feed. She needs to breed.

🪣🧹Good hygiene is your best defence against flies. Clear garbage and dumpsters regularly and douse garbage bins with bleach to discourage nesting females.
🌬 A fan in the kitchen will help difuse the scent of fresh food

What can you do about it?
Discouraging ANY mosquito breeding is paramount. Spring rains bring the perfect environment for mosquitos. Troughs of stagnant water in drains, kids toys on the lawn, pot plants and gutters clogged with branches and leaves offer the perfect nursery for "wrigglers" (mosquito larva) and "tumblers" (mosquito pupa) to incubate to adulthood.

🪣Keep your property clear of stagnant water troughs and you reduce your exposure to breeding moquitos.

🦇Encourage natural predators: dragonflies and bats enjoy a mosquito buffet.

🪴 Plant mosquito repelling plants in your garden such as lavender, marigolds, citronella grass, catnip, rosemary, basil, scented geraniums, mint and alium (onion and garlic)

☣️ Use pesticide foggers in dark, dank areas where mosquito's like to hide (under the stairs, in the back of closets, under the bed, under patio furniture....)

🌬 Mosquitos are attracted to you for the carbon dioxide you exhale. Using a fan in your bedroom dissipates the carbon dioxide and therefore discourages mosquitos finding you.
