*Aluminum can manufacturers have been making cans lighter -- in 1972 each pound of aluminum
produced 22 cans; today it yields 29 cans.
*We use over 80,000,000,000 aluminum pop cans every year.
*At one time, aluminum was more valuable than gold!
*A 60-watt light bulb can be run for over a day on the amount of energy saved by recycling 1 pound of
steel. ***In one year in the United States, the recycling of steel saves enough energy to heat and light 18,000,000 homes!
*Every ton of recycled steel saves 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,000 of coal, and 40 pounds of limestone.

WHY RECYCLING OF ELECTRONIC WASTE IS IMPORTANT

Toxic Materials Because old electronic devices contain toxic substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium and chromium, proper processing is essential to ensure that these materials are not released into the environment. They may also contain other heavy metals and potentially toxic chemical flame retardants.

Landfills remain the most widely used waste disposal option in South Africa. With such a heavy reliance on landfills, the country is fast running out of airspace and so is the available space to extend these sites while complying with stringent waste legislation.

President of the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMSA) Jan Palm recently said that the country’s “reliance on landfill has come at a cost”.

According to the National Waste Information Baseline Report conducted in 2012, South Africa generated approximately 108 million tonnes of waste in 2011, of which 98 million tonnes were disposed of at landfills.

The excessive dumping of waste at landfills also carries many environmental factors which affect surrounding communities and animal habitats.

5 June -World Environment Day Reminds Us To Reconnect With Nature

FACT: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that over 60 million tons of electronic waste is dumped in landfills every year. In Agbogbloshie, Ghana one of the world’s largest e-waste burial grounds houses thousands of tons of electronics. The soil is a breeding ground for lead poisoning. Children as young as seven years-old sort through this waste on a daily basis, causing chronic health problems and crippling injuries.
