We are currently treating a foal, that was rescued by The Dogs Trust, for extensive bite wounds after being mauled by a pack of dogs in Centurion.

Dr Julia from Fourways Equine Clinic performed miracle work during a 2 hour surgery to patch the little guy up.

He is still not out of the woods and will in all likelihood require an additional surgery, but for now we are happy to report that he is stable and drinking.

If you would like to help us assist more animals like him

🌟GALAXY UPDATE 🌟

Today our little guy went for a drive to interview his new mommy at Komandonek Appaloosa Stud 😊. Looks like the two are going to hit it off under the watchful eye of Rianette from Elim Yard and Therapy Centre

😢😢UPDATE😢😢

Unfortunately Chrome has rejected the foal so we are back at the drawing board to find this little guy a mom.

*************

Galaxy did very well over night on his two hourly feeds - the staff not so much 😉. We are so grateful to report that we have managed to loan a nurse mare from Eadi Smit. The relationship is currently still very fragile, but we are hopeful that soon little Galaxy will have a new mommy who actually loves him.

A Baby donkey just came in from the Tembisa coal yard. Her mommy unfortunately died due to severe birth complications.

Baby is going to need around the clock intensive care for the next few days as well a milk formula for the next 4 months.

💕Please help us save the precious little one💕

📌😔PPID in Equine (Cushing's Disease)😔📌

Mammoth has been surrendered to SAID because his mom can no longer care for him (she has end stage cancer)

We unfortunately suspect that he has PPID, a common hormonal disorder, which affects a gland in the brain, called the pituitary gland.

The precise cause of the gland damage has not been proven, however the severity does seem to increase with age. There is also a possibility that obesity predisposes to PPID but this has not been confirmed.

Horses and ponies with PPID are typically identified by long hairy coats, (notably the winter coat is retained for a longer than normal time), excessive sweating and excessive urinating and drinking. Unfortunately these signs often go unnoticed 😭😭

Often the first indication that a donkey may have PPID is if a severe attack of laminitis is identified or if a donkey suffers from recurrent bouts of laminitis. Other clinical signs include an increased susceptibility to recurrent infections and parasite burdens. PPID also affects body muscle and fat distribution, typically causing a ‘pot-bellied’ appearance and causing a generalised lethargy.

It has traditionally been thought that PPID only affects older equines, usually those 15 years or above. However, research carried out over the past few years has indicated that younger animals are also at risk.

PPID can often be diagnosed on the basis of results from a single blood test. The blood test is used to measure the levels of a hormone called ACTH, which is produced in excessive amounts when PPID is present.

If it is confirmed that your donkey does have PPID then treatment is available. It is important to be aware that treatment is usually life-long and will necessitate the costs of daily medication.

Those donkeys that respond well to treatment should go on to have an improved quality of life with less risk of laminitis and the other debilitating conditions associated with PPID.

❤️ TRUST ❤️

Rescued from an auction just more than a week ago. This little soul arrived almost catatonic from fear.

He had been ripped away from his mom while still suckling and thrown onto a cattle truck to be sold to the highest bidder 😢

THANK YOU to all who changed his fate for ever ❤️

💥GUY FAWKES💥

Yet another plea goes out to the community of Vorna Valley to consider the animals.

😭😭😭

Photos from Equine Support Unit's post 04/11/2021

As the sun sets on The Society for Animals in Distress we pray for this night of terror to pass swiftly and with minimal injury, trauma and loss of life, to all sentient beings.

Bambino and Pixie could not be moved with the rest of the herd due to the severity of their injuries. 🐴🐴 They have been tranquilized, have sound mufflers in their ears and are closed up in our barn to limit their trauma. Coming from a life of chronic suffering, it breaks my heart that they should suffer further in what should be a place of safety 😢

We have done our utmost to protect those in our care, but many others will suffer quietly over the next few days. 😭😭😭

😢😢 ACTION DIWALI / GUY FAWKES 😥😥

Final evacuation of the last horses from The Society for Animals in Distress, by New Turf Carriers, in an attempt to protect them from the trauma of Diwali in Midrand 😭😭😭

We pray for compassion for the animals that we are unable to move from the farm. May The Festival of Lights be filled with kindness and compassion for all beings. ❤️❤️❤️

😔BITTERSWEET MOMENTS😔
As Bambino and Pixie settle in for the night one little boy is still out there. 😭😭😭

Photos from Equine Support Unit's post 23/10/2021

We have spent the day in Klipgat with Tshwane SPCA looking for the abused donkeys. With the assistance of Craig Sacke from Isec Security and his eye in the sky, we manage to uplift another injured donkey. Unfortunately not the one that we were looking for, but another little soul saved ❤️

We will be back tomorrow to fight another day!!!

23/10/2021

We have managed to find the first donkey with the help of an informant. Tshwane SPCA has confiscated him and criminal charges will be brought against the owner.

21/10/2021

🎯UPDATE 23 OCTOBER 2021🎯
💃💃Tshwane SPCA is in transit with the first one of our donkey victims!! We will go back into klipgat as soon as he has received veterinary treatment, to search for the others.

******************.

📌UPDATE 22 October 2021📌
We are extremely grateful for the amazing response to our plea for boots on the ground. Private individuals, CPF members and security companies have all signed up for this massive rescue operation over the weekend.

Tshwane SPCA will be on standby and have obtained a seizure warrant to remove the donkeys as well as all equipment pertaining to the case. They have also spent part of the day distributing reward pamphlets within the community, and this has started to produce some good leads as to the whereabouts of the donkeys.🙂

We are hopeful that by Monday morning these animals will be in safe hands.🙏🙏🙏

****************

😔On 19 October 2021 the owner of these donkeys evaded the SPCA and the donkeys have subsequently been hidden within the Klipgat community. It is critical that they are found as soon as possible.

📌If you are prepared to join an organised search party in the Mabopane area near Pretoria on Saturday 23 October 2021 please Inbox me your contact details.
