Some interesting insights from agricultural economist Wandile Sihlobo on the particpation of young people in agriculture.

OPINIONISTA: SA youth doesn’t like farming because it’s not sexy. True or false? Some agribusinesses and agriculturalists argue that vocational training institutions are not efficiently producing skills needed for agriculture today, and that might be part of the reason why some young people are not finding work in this sector.

It is time that the abuse by lawyers and financial institutions is ended. Sad part is the existing legislation does not effectively deal with treating customers fairly.

The Head and the Load, William Kentridge’s epic production on imperial indifference in WWI, premieres in London | Daily Maverick 13/07/2018

Bravo to William Kentridge and his South African cast with the premiere of The Head and Load at the Tate Modern in London. The stellar performance recognizes the contribution of 2 million African soldiers in World War 1, exposing the gross omission of this contribution and the inequalities of the colonial overlords during the war effort. Recognition is the first step, the prickly question of restitution for colonialism remains, and not just for Africa.

How your health issues are manipulated to serve the interests of big medical business | Daily Maverick 06/07/2018

The competition commission weighs in on medical funding situation in South Africa as reported by Biznews. The market mechanism is by no means perfect with spiraling costs, a lack of transparency and the concentration of providers offering increasingly complex products from their shiny office towers. Change and controls are necessary, but one cannot ignore the disaster of the management of the public health system, which is not a viable alternative in its current form. The Minister and industry have a mountain to climb.

How your health issues are manipulated to serve the interests of big medical business | Daily Maverick Private healthcare companies continue to build new facilities and doctors have been referring patients to hospitals to fill the beds, with some patients not needing to go there in the first place. This was one of a number of findings from the Competition Commission’s report on the costs of private...

OP-ED: Sorry, but the NHI Bill is just not the right medicine 26/06/2018

South Africa prepares for the introduction of a National Health scheme by 2026 with the tabling of the NHI Bill. Sasha Stevenson from SECTION27 provides a balanced view of the laudible objectives of the Bill, and some of the challenge faced in the implementation of universal healthcare coverage for South Africans. Balancing the needs of every citizen for accessible healthcare, stakeholders' requirements to make a fair living and the unfortunate history of poor service delivery by the State presents the biggest challenge.

OP-ED: Sorry, but the NHI Bill is just not the right medicine SECTION27 supports the extension of healthcare to as many South Africans as possible, but until the public health system is fixed and private healthcare better regulated, this will remain a chimera.

High interest micro-loans and wealth redistribution, a toxic mix - Hagedorn - BizNews.com 06/02/2018

Shawn Hagedorn unpacks the problem with micro-lending in South Africa and its culpability in perpetuating poverty in this Biznews article. He argues that micro-lending interest rates are simply to high and entrench poverty. Banking is not the only culprit in financial services in South Africa as many insurance products charge high administration fees, limiting the ability for working class people to generate wealth and escape the poverty trap. MIHR focuses our benefit solutions on adding real value and making a difference in the lives of working class South Africans with cost effective group risk products.

High interest micro-loans and wealth redistribution, a toxic mix - Hagedorn - BizNews.com Whatever you think about Viceroy’s apparently damning report on Capitec, there’s a much wider issue at stake.
