As a Mentor, we are tasked with fun activities such as Bible lessons, praise and worship and assembly. Still, the majority of our responsibilities lie in Christian Counselling: guiding young minds through the storms of life and counselling parents and teachers.
We are tasked with shifting their disaster mindset to that of hope and guiding them to spiritual growth. As a Mentor I’m a symbolic representation of Christ; His love, acceptance and understanding. If we only place the child’s suffering in the perspective of human understanding, hopelessness and frustration will set in, but as followers of Jesus, we know that He has triumphed over sin and death. We assist in sparking new hope and guiding them towards setting SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time Based) using the life and work of Jesus Christ as Biblical guidance. We can relate to each other through His suffering and victory.
Each day I am privileged to counsel a child, I am overwhelmed with the responsibility I have in Christ to lead, nurture, and develop the next generation of believers according to the Great Commission (Matt 28:16-20).

At Mentors in Motion, we place Mentors in Primary and High Schools to guide the youth of our country spiritually, emotionally and developmentally. We teach them Biblical truths while mentoring them to steer their sails and navigate the stormy weather of adolescence and peer pressures. ’n Jaar terug het ek my eie lewe probeer neem. Ek het geen moed gehad om enigiets te doen nie. Ek het al die deure wat die Here vir my oopgemaak het net weer toegeslaan. Ek wou nie hulp kry nie want ek het veilig en gemaklik gevoel in die donkerte. Ek het die Here uit my lewe uitgesluit. Uit die bloute uit het daar ‘n vreemdeling in my lewe opgedaag – ‘n MiM Mentor. Sy het my deurgedruk tot die einde. Sy het nooit moed opgegee om my te help nie. Sy het my weer in die Here laat glo. Al het ek opgegee in my lewe het sy my altyd opgetel en gesê “Dis nie verby nie. Jy gaan deur hierdie werk.” Ek het die Bybel weer begin lees en ‘n Bybelvers gekry wat my deur elke dag kry….Psalm 139:14. Ek het besef die lewe is soos ‘n rivier – dit gaan deur kronkels, maar vloei nie agteruit nie. Ek is so dankbaar daar was 'n Mentor by my skool.(Nina*, Gr 11)

Vandag word liefde gevier; kom ons nader tot die Een wat Eerste liefgehad het. Ons hemelse Vader wat in liefde sy Seun gegee het sodat elkeen van ons ware, onbaatsugtige liefde kan ervaar. Kom ons eer God vandag vir daardie liefde, deur nie net ons gades en kinders in liefde te ontvang nie, maar ook die bedelaar op straat, die kollega by die werk met 'n verskillende uitkyk as jy en selfs daardie individue wat jou lewe versuur. Mag jy 'n liefde-gevulde Valentyns ervaar.

Well done to all our Mentors who attended the Youth Mental Health First Aider training this week. Thank you Inge Nieuwoudt and Dr Vasi, we learnt new skills to assess, equip and assist the youth we work with, and gained excellent insight into adolescent mental health.
