Montessori at Home Independent School
We are a proudly authentic Montessori School located in Southern Paarl.
The pumpkin seeds we’ve been germinating in our Lower Elementary class have provided wonderful learning opportunities focused on the growth and properties of roots. The children have had the chance to observe different types of roots, noting how they navigate around obstacles, grow downward, and anchor the soil in place. A particularly engaging visual was created when the roots grew into the paper towel, offering a clear example of how they dig into their surroundings for stability.

There is nothing like finding an activity that ignites curiosity and wonder. 🤩
Here, two friends are working with the stereognostic bags.
In a Montessori environment, stereognostic bags are a wonderful tool for developing children's tactile senses and cognitive skills. These bags are filled with various objects that children can't see, but can feel through the fabric. By reaching into the bag and identifying the objects based only on touch, children improve their hand-eye coordination, focus, and sensory awareness. It's a simple yet powerful way to encourage exploration, concentration, and language development—skills that help children understand and navigate the world around them!

"It is through repetition, that true learning takes place" - Dr Maria Montessori
In our school, we provide an environment where the child is free to repeat an activity for as long as the need to do so is there. Each time a child repeats an activity, they are building more than just a skill. Repetition nurtures independence, deepens focus, and instills a sense of mastery while providing comfort and familiarity. The adult should be careful to stand back observe and resist the urge to intervene. Trust that the child’s inner drive will guide them toward improvement through control of error. With each repetition, neural pathways strengthen, transforming effort into ease.

Montessori vs Traditional Preschool: How to choose — Cornerstone Montessori Preschool Cornerstone Children’s Centre: Choosing the right preschool for your child can be overwhelming.
Our school is beyond blessed to have a full compliment of authentic Montessori material in all our classes. Here, a Lower Elementary student is practising the concept of factors using the Peg Board.
How does this work?
1. The teacher introduces factors and multiples, explaining that factors are numbers that can be multiplied together to produce a given number.
2. The child uses the peg board, which has a grid of holes where pegs can be placed. Each hole corresponds to a number. For example, if the child is learning about the factors of 12, they would look for combinations of pegs that can fill the board in ways that represent multiplication (e.g., 1x12, 2x6, 3x4).
3. The child places pegs into the holes, experimenting with different combinations. This tactile experience helps reinforce the concept of factors through visual and physical manipulation.
4. As the child places pegs, they begin to see patterns and relationships between numbers. They can group pegs to show pairs, reinforcing the idea of factor pairs.
5. Children are encouraged to explore independently, finding factors for various numbers at their own pace. This autonomy fosters a deeper understanding as they make connections on their own.
6. After the activity, the child can discuss their findings with the teacher or peers, solidifying their understanding and allowing for collaborative learning.
Overall, the peg board serves as a concrete representation of abstract mathematical concepts, making learning interactive and engaging in a Montessori setting.
Selecting activities that cater to each child's individual needs is an essential part of the uninterrupted work cycle. In this instance, two friends have chosen to explore the tasting bottles to refine their sense of taste. Their focus is palpable as they learn to discern, match and discriminate between sweet, salty, sour, and bitter flavours.

At our school, we nurture the child's need for independence by encouraging even the youngest child to take personal responsibility for their belongings and fostering a sense of autonomy by walking into school independently. This aligns with an authentic Montessori approach of "Help me to do it myself" promoting critical thinking and a sense of agency from the start.

A group of Lower Elementary students are currently in the throes of learning about the history of communication in signs, which has also led to some study on ancient civilisations. We have been looking into the Sumerians, and their writing. Armed with a form of Cuneiform alphabet, the children imagined that they were the first Sumerians to figure out the best tools to write on their clay tablets with. They tried a few materials that they found outside, but ultimately settled on using pencils - trial and error for these imaginative Sumerians! Activities like this create wonderful opportunities for constructive conversation and talking about what lessons learnt.

At our Montessori school, we are committed to the six principles of authentic practice. One of those principles is to have a full complement of Montessori learning material as designed by Dr. Maria Montessori. Here, two children enjoy exploring the phonetic farm, which teaches the child the foundational concepts of phonetics and language development through hands-on exploration. The phonetic farm consists of various engaging materials, such as letter tiles, picture cards, and movable alphabets, allowing children to connect sounds with letters and words in a tactile manner.
As they interact with the materials, the children develop critical phonemic awareness skills, which lay the groundwork for reading and writing. The open-ended nature of the activities encourages creativity and independence, as they can choose their own paths of discovery. This approach not only fosters a love for language but also nurtures their cognitive and social development, as they often collaborate and share ideas with one another during play.
In a Montessori environment, these experiences are carefully designed to respect each child's unique learning pace, allowing them to gain confidence in their abilities and develop a lifelong passion for learning.

🌟✨ Exciting Steps in Early Learning! ✨🌟
Before introducing our little learners to touch boards, we focus on sensitizing their little fingers! 👐💖 This crucial step helps develop their tactile sensitivity and fine motor skills, making the transition to the touch boards even more effective.
Why is this important? 🤔 By engaging their senses through various textures and materials, children build a strong foundation for their learning journey. It helps them become more aware of shapes and letters, setting the stage for successful interactions with sandpaper numerals and letters later on.
Once their fingers are ready, the fun begins! 🎉 They can trace the sandpaper letters and numbers, reinforcing their learning through touch, sight, and movement. This multisensory approach not only enhances their understanding but also makes learning an enjoyable adventure!

Everyone talks about peace but no one educates for peace. In this world, they educate for competition, and competition is the beginning of any war. When educating to cooperate and owe each other solidarity, that day we will be educating for peace.
