Such fun at The Nest yesterday morning with the residents participating in our OT physical and cognitive stimulation group!
EXCITING NEWS! 🎉
We at Engage Occupational Therapy now offer Driveability Fitness to Drive Assessments!
A Driveability Fitness to Drive assessment aims to provide a clear indication of whether a person is fit to drive - after suffering a stroke, being diagnosed with a neurological condition, living with dementia or simply due to aging. It is a comprehensive clinical and functional driver evaluation, focusing on driving abilities and safety on the road. Contact us for more information on 073 238 4220 or [email protected]
Dear OT,
Don't be so hard on yourself..
You don't need to know it all.
You don't need to be armed with answers.
You don't need to prepare for every clinical scenario.
You don't need to collect yet another certificate.
But you need to listen.
Listen deeply.
Not just with your ears.
But with all of your senses.
What do you see?
What do you sense?
🧠Dementia Tip for the week!

🌿CAREGIVER TRAINING 🌿
As therapists working in outpatient rehab we are lucky if we get to spend more than 1-2 hours per week with our clients. When it comes to neuro rehab and neuroplasticity some of the core principles are
- Repetition matters
- Intensity matters
- Time matters
So how do we ensure we can get optimal recovery? The answer lies within the caregivers and family members. They are an integral part of our therapy and without them we can actually make very little difference in our clients lives. Training and educating them on positioning, home exercises, routines and handling skills is SO important. We love working with families and caregivers and they are the hidden heroes behind your rehab teams!
We work with Stroke clients on a daily basis and the trauma and adjustment to life after a stroke is huge and extremely difficult. Strokes are more common than we realise and it can happen to ANYONE! So to help spread awareness of strokes we thought we'd take this opportunity to let you meet and hear from some of our Stroke Survivors 🌿
Happy World Occupational Therapy Day!

Rolling in bed is such a therapeutic movement as it promotes activity throughout the body. With this patient I was facilitating rolling towards the hemplegic side. This is an easy movement for a patient to achieve even in the early stages after stroke. It also assisted with inhibiting hypertonicity in the arm. I also love that it gives proprioceptive input through the hemiplegic shoulder and draws awareness to that side 🖐
Remember to protect that hemiplegic shoulder to prevent pain later on!
Any other rehab therapists love doing matwork with their stroke patients?! I absolutely love it. This was a particularly special session as this amazing patient is actually a yoga teacher so getting onto her mat post stroke was such a highlight and a real meaningful activity for her 🧘♀️
I couldn't help taking a photo of this today! I assessed a new lady who has suffered a CVA and recently returned home after being in hospital for over 6 weeks. Her dog has missed her so much. She now she stays ALL DAY at this window watching her mom and making sure she is OK. Talk about love and loyalty ❤🐕 Not to mention animal therapy and the healing power in that!
I don't need to write about the situation in KZN right now because by now we all know. Needless to say trying to run a practice and see our patients in need hasn't been easy.
BUT yesterday and today we ventured out and did some home visits to our incredible patients in need. After 3 days of anxiety and fear I returned home this evening feeling so grateful that I could put one foot in front of the other and take a step forward. Thanks to our amazing communities today Sylke and I could get petrol in our cars and travel PMB, Hilton and Howick safely. Today I was able to get a lady out of bed to access her toilet for the first time in a week after suffering a CVA and faciltate another man to walk for the first time without his walking frame. During times like these we are all going back to the basics. One step at a time everyone!
Huge shout out to my amazing side kick OT for being brave, sitting in traffic and navigating many blocked roads to access our patients! You rock!

WELCOME 🌿
Meet the incredible Sylke Johannes who has joined the team. Sylke thank you for the love and joy you bring to the practice and our clients. You are a huge blessing!
"Hi, my name is Sylke Johannes, I am an Occupational Therapist. I completed my studies at Wits in 2019, followed by my community service year at Edendale Hospital, Pietermaritzburg in 2020. Since January 2021 I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to work with Amy in her Engage OT practice. I’m passionate about Adult Physical and Neuro Rehab and I have had the privilege to be a part of so many lives, walking with them on their road to recovery.
In my free time I enjoy cuddling with my puppy Joey and cooking up a storm in the kitchen with my husband. I also enjoy the outdoors, especially hiking in the Drakensberg.
I look forward to continue working at Engage OT and be a part of the positive impact it has on people’s lives."
A huge congratulation to this amazing practice! My journey as an OT post community service started with Greenhough OT Inc and I could not have worked in a better place! The best part is we still work side by side and I am so blessed to do so # # #
H O O R A Y 🌿
Yesterday was a really exciting day seeing this patient walk on his prosthetic leg! A year of hard work and perseverance he has amazed us all. We did not think it would be possible with such a high amputation at his age with multiple comorbidities!
We all have our good and bad days at work right?
I watched an amazing Ted talk earlier this week and it encouraged me to come back to the "Why" . Why do you do what you do?
I'm an OT because I love people and serving them brings me joy. I love connecting with my patients. I love the feeling of being able to help.
On the bad days remind yourself of your "why"
So tell me, why do you do what you do?
🌿HOPE🌿
Meet the amazing Philile Kgaile - she developed a very serious pneumonia and critical illness myeopathy in December 2020 leaving her in ICU for over a month on a ventilator. When we started seeing Philile in ICU she could wriggle her toes ever so slightly. NO other movement in her upper or lower limbs and with a trachea in place we attempted to lip read and use communication boards in order to communicate with her.
Now here she is a month later in her home STANDING in her kitchen doing a baking session with her amazing OT Sylke Johannes
A story of hope and determination that we have been honoured to be apart of. We hope to get Philile even more independent and back to her job in the upcoming weeks
P R O G R E S S
During these tough times we find ourselves searching for positivity & hope.👀
So lucky am I that my job brings me just that. This amazing client had NO movement in his affected left arm in Nov 2020 post stroke. Not only that, he had such poor sensation and a severe neglect that he had no idea his left arm was even part of his body 💪
Here he is 3 months later reaching, moving and manipulating 🙌
