*KZNCC Disaster response team descended on Durban’s Kennedy Road shack fire site as thousands left homeless* The KZNCC Executive Secretary, Bishop Nathi Zondi led a delegation of church leaders representing the KZNCLG, Diakonia Council of Churches and KZNCC. The delegation today conducted a pastoral visit to Kennedy Road informal settlement in Durban. The cause of the fire is not yet known. However, some eyewitnesses say it started when two people, who had been drinking, got into an argument. "We witnessed the devastation caused by the fires on people’s homes and their livelihoods. Leaders then offered spiritual support to the victims and also left some donated materials", said Bishop Zondi.

KZN floods: KZNCC on current interventions, findings and actions taken. The KwaZulu-Natal Christian Council (KZNCC) is highly concerned about the current situation affecting most parts of KwaZulu-Natal. "We are calling on all churches to join in prayer that we don't have floods", declared Dr Douglas Dziva, Chief Executive Officer of KZNCC. Below is a summary of what is in place: 1. We are monitoring the situation and collecting data in all 11 districts. All regions are monitoring the situation. 2. We are doing situational analysis and needs assessment as the information comes in. 3. We have also asked Traditional leaders to help monitor the flooding in their areas and report back to us. 4. We are urging teams of Church leaders to volunteer so that they can visit and assess areas affected by floods. In anticipation, we are encouraging churches to start special collections so that KZNCC is ready to distribute food or blankets. The blankets collected from Cardinal Napier's office are at KZNCC and are ready to be distributed as per needs assessments. We are linking with DSD and COGTA so that we share information and avoid duplication. We have requested all regions to share information requiring our urgent attention. More will be presented at our recurring virtual meeting. We are inviting Decision Makers in our province to join us this coming Monday, 09 January 2023 at 07h00 to 08h30. The meeting will be via Zoom conferencing platform. For more details kindly contact Ms Xola Nkabinde on 072 834 4219, email [email protected] [FROM THE DESK OF THE CEO]
