THIS MILK IS NOT SUITABLE FOR INFANT FEEDING

My little one is almost 4months old, and from early on we have identified that she is allergic to cows milk protein. This causes gastrointestinal symptoms such as mucous in her nappies along with other.

I now use cows milk protein alternative milk options for coffee and cooking.
My favorite is: Macadamia milk from
Now I can still enjoy my coffee and my little can grow optimal with breastmilk.

For breastfeeding advice and allergies ask your health care professional for help or contact a Dietitian.

This is still a favorite in our house! One of the biggest challenges for me with packing a lunchbox is what to put on the sandwiches.
Because it must still be healthy and without excessive sugar and salt, and protein is a plus.
I then found the perfect alternative to chocolate spread. Macadamia Cocoa Nut Butter from
High in protein and preservatives free, and the kids love it.

It is a now a lunchbox favorite on a slice of brown bread or a teaspoon full after a swim in this heat. Even my little one with cow’s milk protein allergy can now also enjoy chocolate on his bread.

This week, as we celebrate World Breastfeeding Week, the theme "Let's make breastfeeding and work, work!" brings attention to the critical issue faced by many working mothers who want to continue breastfeeding after returning to work.

Breastfeeding is undoubtedly the best way to nourish infants, providing them with essential nutrients and antibodies for optimal growth and development. We set out to inform and educate those in our midst on ways to overcome these barriers.

By working together, we can ensure that breastfeeding and work truly can work hand in hand for the benefit of all.

Thank you to all the dads that also came for support, you are of immense value to the breastfeeding dyad.

Worldwide, one in every ten babies is born prematurely.
These little ones have many challenges to overcome, which can include breathing difficulties, small kidneys, underdeveloped hearts, and feeding difficulties.
Premature babies are cared for in the hospital’s NICU by numerous healthcare professionals, including a lactation consultant to support the mother with lactation. Mothers of premature babies need extra support to establish milk supply until their little one is strong enough to feed directly from the breast.
Why are we telling you this?
Because there is a way that we as the community can help, and that is by donating breastmilk.
Giving breastmilk to premature babies increases their chance of survival tremendously.
Just 50ml of breastmilk is enough to feed a premature baby for a whole day.
If you want to donate or if you are interested in learning more, call Arné Naudé at 079 501 6925 or visit the website of the South African Breastmilk Reserve (SABR) at https://www.sabr.org.za/
You can save a life by donating life-saving breastmilk!

Breastfeeding should never be painful, it is possible to feel discomfort and initially feel a tug at the breast.

There should not be pain, pinch and never painful sores on the ni***es. The main reason is that the baby is not attached to the ni**le, as seen in the picture, but rather takes a deep latch on the ar**la. The ni**le is free to move and then squeeze the milk from the breast when pushed against the hard plate inside the mouth.

Breastfeeding should not be painful, and mothers should never have to push through pain, make sure to get help we you need it.

At first I thought not to share a very challenging event that changed our family's lifestyle and dietary choices, but then I realised how my heart is crying out for children with the same symptoms but without the knowledge and help that they need.

So here is how our story goes...
I have a 3 year old daughter, who, even in the womb, was busy, kicked a lot and is still today, strong willed.

As a Dietitian in profession I kept sugary treats away as far as possible and made sure that she loved vegetables and fruits.
But when she went to pre-school at 18 months I lost a bit of control over what she ate. I still packed healthy snacks and food, but not all the friends had these, and soon she was exposed to more and more sweets and sugary drinks (which I did not approve of). This was the beginning of a very difficult road. When there was a birthday party at school the teacher at least sent the packets home so that I could choose what I wanted to give to her.
One big mistake that I made, was to always opt for jellies and softer, coloured sweets.
I did not then have the understanding of the effect of colourants in children's' diets.

After she turned two I could see a drastic change in her behaviour. I ascribed it to her age and the typical tantrums that went with it, but it became unbearable. She was constantly irritated, threw tantrums, was over emotional and asked for sweets every day and then put up heavy fights when I refused or didn't have. The whole year looked like this and caused so much anxiety and emotional stress in our home. I didn't know how other parents dealt with it.

I slowly started to realize a pattern...every time she had sugary treats with food colourants, the outbursts would start. So I reached out to the school and asked on numerous occasions to keep sweets away from her. But it was a losing battle. I then contacted every pre-school in town to hear what their policy was about sweets at school or in lunchboxes. There were only a few schools that only allowed healthy snacks, no sweets and only water.
We decided to move her and within a week we had a completely different child.

I was even more determined to find out what exactly caused her behavioural changes. The main differences at the new school was that they played outside most of the day, they didn't watch any TV at school and never gave any sweets. Everything went well until the first Friday which was a 'snoepie' day. When I fetched her that afternoon she was irritable and her emotions were everywhere. The next week I replaced her 'snoepie' with colourant free sweets (a chocolate and white marshmallows) and the symptoms didn't re-occur.

Our lives has drastically changed for the better and I witness the difference every single day. Even her concentration span was longer and she could sit and build a puzzle which she could never do before. The moment she is given colourants she has a reaction to it. I have tested it numerous times, and I also experimented with natural colorants, to which she doesn't have a reaction.

This is definitely not applicable to all children but I want to share this information for the parents out there that see the same symptoms and have the same frustrations but don't know how to help. We now have a colourant free and mostly emotional free home (because she is still a normal 3 year old).

I will share more on natural vs synthetic colourants in a post to follow, as well as how to make better choices.

Some useful advice: Utilize your benefits and request assistance and support.

It has been proven that having support makes it easier to continue exclusive breastfeeding. It is also preferable to seek assistance sooner rather than later.

Be smart about the treats added to lunchboxes!

What are the benefits of adding home-made muffins instead?
-More fiber, less sugar, and definitely the cost.
I did a quick comparison this morning. The Pre-mix bran muffins actually have more sugar than pre-packed Sponge cakes, but they do have fiber benefit. It is better to prepare muffins from scratch so that you know how much sugar and what type is added and that the muffins are full of fiber which has various benefits for your child.

Below is an easy healthy blueberry muffin recipe,(see link in comments) low in sugar and high in fiber and loved by kids.

INGREDIENTS
Nonstick cooking spray and/or 12 paper muffin liners
¼ cup (½ stick) unsalted butter, melted (may substitute canola oil)
⅓ cup pure maple syrup or honey
½ cup unsweetened applesauce
⅔ cup Vanilla or plain yogurt
1 egg
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1¾ cup old-fashioned rolled oats (can be blended)
¾ cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon fine salt
1 cup blueberries

*The added oats and blueberries are amazing fiber sources.
If time is your challenge, bake the muffins over weekends with your children.
