TREES researchers attended the ICOT conference in Corfu (Greece) this week. It was an excellent opportunity to reflect on current practices, share current research initiatives, meet old friends and make new friends. The tourism sector is in an exciting phase, and the importance of research is growing. Digital technologies are a significant part of the future of tourism, but the tourist remains king.
Papers delivered:
A comparative analysis of the socio-economic impacts and participation in tourism for communities surrounding the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park (Chambwe, M) - also won best paper ๐
Investigation of destination management and resources in contributing to competitive advantage: A tourism business perspective (Gugwana, Z, Tseane-Gumbi, L & du Plessis, E)
Delineating the South African tourism accommodation grading system: A demand perspective on contemporary quality indicators (Slabbert, E. & Matiza, T)
The skills, skills gaps and requirements of the South African hospitality sector (du Plessis, E, Slabbert, E. & Matiza, T.)
Happy Youth Month! Enjoy and respect the hard won freedoms!
Prof. Martinette Kruger, Prof. Adam Viljoen, and Dr. Walter Wessels from TREES at the North-West University presented papers at The INC in Amsterdam that offered insights into how digital transformation influences the experiences of youth at music festivals, segmentation of Airbnb guests in Cape Town, and the needs for family-friendly offerings at art festivals in South Africa, respectively. Their presentations were well-received, and the paper by Profs. Kruger and Viljoen, on the role of digital technologies in shaping identities and fostering a sense of community among young festivalgoers, was nominated for the best paper award in the events pillar of the conference.

As the African proverb goes, "๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐" in the case of organising a conference, the same sentiment is felt. We want to thank all the delegates for attending the Travel and Tourism Research Association conference held in George, South Africa, at the beautiful Fancourt Luxury Hotel and Resort. We want to especially highlight our esteem for our Keynote speakers in guiding and providing insights into navigating sustainable futures. Our excellent keynote speakers included Mr Tim Harris, Prof Dimitrios Buhalis, Prof Sara Dolnicar and Prof Peet vd Merwe.
The team from TTRA and the NWU also recognises and appreciates the support from our sponsors, without whom this conference would not have been possible.
