The perfect transition.
2-piece set. Crew neck sweat top with rib neck and sleeve inset detail. Pull on pants, back elasticated, side rouche detail with rib insets. Cotton stretch fleece, rib.
Every 4 years I celebrate the incredible honour I was given by being chosen from my design submission, to create the South African Opening Ceremony kit for the London Olympics in 2012.
After the invite came through I thoroughly researched usual OC kits, I found them in general to look like uptight Airline uniforms. My instinct was to make it look smart but preppy, and for it to look unmistakable that it was the South African team. Colourful and loud.
That evening I remember going for pizza at our local and excitedly scribbling the design. I remember saying to my husband Brendan, I am going to win this. And I did!
Sascoc invited “the nation’s leading fashion houses” and 20 submissions, were then shortlisted to 6, decided on by Miss SA, Soccer star Luca Radebe, television personalities, some athletes, and fashion experts.
The short list was then published in the YOU, DRUM, Huisgenoot magazines, SuperSport and SABC websites and the public voted via an sms line for their favourite.
It was incredibly stressful, as they announced me as the winner almost 3 weeks later than originally published, and then told me I needed to fly to JHB with samples for both the Mens and Womens versions, a week later for the unveiling marketing event.
The making of the design was never part of the initial brief!
A frantic search for all the correct colours in the correct fabrics ensued…. We made the patterns, got the samples made, and arrived with them in time.
At this marketing event, I realised that from the questions I was being asked from the people who were now to take over the manufacture of the bulk - it was going to be a disaster if I didn’t take charge.
So just 3 weeks later, 450 units of the two styles were made, in time, in the tiny factory, over the given size ratio!!
I also had to have them embroidered with the Olympic logo, as well the brand of the Chinese company that had manufactured the athletes event wear (which were awful btw).
So although my brand label was sewn into the neckline - I received no acknowledgement.(outside of the SASCOC press releases.)
I did manage to be a Daily News street pole poster: OLYMPIC GOLD FOR DURBAN DESIGNER.
It bums me out that every games since there are so many complaints about all the cringey outfits that have been paraded - people keep saying “why dont they get one of SA’s talented designers the job”. Well they did once - via a democratic vote, and the results were great!!!
Seeing the powerful human made flag bounce before my eyes, live at the ceremony brought tears to my eyes.
The kit was listed and printed as one of the best in the London Business Times newspaper the following day, alongside Stella McCartney for GB, Ralph Lauren for USA, Armani for Italy, and Puma for Jamaica.
I was very proud of myself.
Nobody complained about the 2012 OC kit. Instead the buzz was all about Caster’s testosterone levels, and Oscar attempting to qualify in both the able and disabled games.
So if you didn’t know - now you know - and Ill remind you again in 4 years time:)
Maybe the company in charge in 2028 will call me in as a consultant ;)
