Ek wil graag vandag gesels oor positiewe versterking. Wil jy weet hoe om self-vertroue by jou kind te bou? Spreek positiewe goed oor hulle uit! "Hierdie is pragtige werk!" "Jy werk so hard!" "Kyk hoe netjies is hierdie een!"

Eerder as om kruisies te maak oor foute en met rooi pen orals te merk wat verkeerd is, voel ek ons moet sirkel wat uitstekend is!

Ek wys eers vir Michaela hoe moet die letter lyk. So die eerste 3 J's is myne. Dan gaan sy voort om haar beste te gee. As sy klaar is, evalueer sy eers haar werk self. En dan kies ek my gunsteling.

Getting our body ready for school doesn't require the alphabet or writing our name with a pencil. It starts with building a strong foundation of physical, emotional and social skills, all learnt and mastered through play.

What is school readiness?

* Being able to open your own lunchbox and glad wrap
* Being able to identify your photo on your bag hook
* Being able to put on your own shoes and jumper
* Being able to ask your teacher for help when you feel nervous or worried
* Being able to tell a friend to 'stop' when they're in your personal space or snatching your toy
* Being able to wait turns for the slide or in a game of cards
* Being able to persist when problem solving a puzzle or a challenging game
* Being able to follow a 3 step instruction (get your hat, put your suncream on, then stand and wait at the door)

How do we develop these skills?

* By waiting our turn for the swing at the play ground, waiting for 10 to 30 seconds for our parent’s response if they are budy

* Playing board games that are a little bit tricky, and we may not always win

* Following 3 step instructions each day, by putting our own dishes in the sink after snack, sorting clothes into piles (doesn’t need to be folded), organising our own drink bottle into our back pack

* Teaching our body how to coordinate movement so we can speed up our body when playing outside with our friends, then calm down our body when it’s time for learning

* By asking our family for help using picture cards or words rather than waiting for our family to know what we need straight away
...................................

When should we start working on this at home?

* Try to start practicing these skills when your child starts 3 year old kindergarten, but know that they will keep making mistakes as they’re learning, similarly to when keep making mistakes when learning to speak a new language, learn how to waterski, etc.

Please share your school readiness thoughts below.

“When Grief comes knocking, answer the door. Let her in.

Let her tell you all that was lost. Let her remind you how marvelous it was. Let her paint your memories in slow motion, let her sing your story with a cello. Let her teach you gratefulness and how to pay attention.Do not turn her away at the door. If you do, she will come back again knocking.

Let her speak her piece. Let her do her work, cleansing you of your tears. Then send her on her way. Then you can sleep through the night without waking from her tapping.”

An excerpt from Jane’s unreleased poem “When Grief Comes Knocking” - Nightbirde

When you take storytelling seriously, it gives you practical skills to create meaningful relationships with your children, friends, and family.
