The Minister of Basic Education, Honourable Siviwe Gwarube, will this morning officiate at the opening ceremony of the 40th Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA) Annual Conference held in Cape Town.

Umalusi will host the 40th AEAA annual conference from tomorrow, 19 to 23 August 2024 in Century City Conference Centre and Hotels, Cape Town.
Delegates who include education policy makers, assessment specialists, practitioners, and decision makers from various continents will be in attendance.

The 40th Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA) Conference will bring together education policy makers, assessment specialists, practitioners, academics, and decision makers, from across the African continent, as well as from Europe, India, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and other regions around the world.
Keynote speakers are, Prof Loyiso Jita, Dr Nkosinathi Sishi, Dr Heidi Bolton, Prof Anil Kanjee, and Prof Vukosi Marivate.
As a build-up to the 40th , the Umalusi staff attended the Quality Promotion engagement today, which was addressed by Dr Arnold Brouwer, focusing on educational testing.
Dr Brouwer engaged on the work of the Dutch Research Centre for Examinations and Certification (RCEC), Competency-based Education and Assessment, RCEC Institutional Audit process, and RCEC product Audit of National Senior Certificate examinations.
His topics aligned with the 40th AEAA conference theme: Reimagining educational assessment in the age of multiple dimensions of learning in a global society.
Dr Brouwer will also be one of the workshop speakers on the first day (19 August 2024) of the conference.

Our CEO Dr Mafu S Rakometsi, engaged stakeholders at the University of the Western Cape yesterday, on the work of Umalusi, specifically on the process of standardisation of learner results.
Dr Rakometsi reiterated that Umalusi applies the same standardisation principles on all results, and is the final arbiter on standardisation decisions.
[DYK] The Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA) is a continental body that has 21 active primary members (educational assessment bodies) with several individual members drawn from both public and private institutions mainly from Sub-Sahara Africa.

Prof Anil Kanjee is a Research Professor at the Tshwane University of Technology TUT, whose work focuses on addressing the challenge of equity and quality in education.
He is currently supporting the Education Department and Teacher Unions to implement the National Assessment for Learning Pedagogical Strategy in South African schools.

Dr Heidi Bolton is the Senior Manager: Research at the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA ), the entity that oversees the implementation and development of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) in South Africa.
Dr Bolton conducts, oversees, publishes, and disseminates research that contributes an evidence base for SAQA’s work.
Keynote speaker for the 40th AEAA Conference.
Dr Nkosinathi Sishi is the Director-General of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) in South Africa. He is the Accounting Authority of the National Skills Fund.
He has 38 years of experience in different spheres of government and state-owned enterprises holding various positions in the Executive and Senior Management Services (SMS) in the public service.

Prof Loyiso Jita: Dean of Education at the University of the Free State, began his career as a science and mathematics teacher after graduating with Biochemistry and Microbiology from the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS).
He has published many articles on Instructional Leadership, Teacher Development and change, Science and Mathematics education, Lesson Study and has presented over 50 papers at local and international conferences. He has also supervised to completion over 40 PhD graduates.

Our Quality Assurance of Assessment Unit conducted Integrated Training of Provincial Monitors in Durban today.
Monitors were capacitated on assessment policies and directives, and administration of national exams and marking processes, among other things.

Our campaign responds to the low literacy levels amongst primary school learners as revealed by the 2021 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) results.
The study revealed that 81% of our primary school pupils are unable to read for meaning in their home languages by the time they turn 10 years of age.
