What an exciting two days we had. We will do so again in October 2025.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its implications for teaching and learning were the main topics of discussion at the fourth annual Fully Online Distance Education Symposium - FODES hosted by the University of Pretoria (UP).
“AI is all brain and no heart,” Dr Helen Crompton, Executive Director of the Research Institute for Digital Innovation in Learning at Old Dominion University in the US, told participants during the symposium keynote address as she discussed the implications of generative AI for education and learning.

Dr Crompton is a powerhouse in the field of educational technology. As the Executive Director of the Research Institute for Digital Innovation in Learning (RIDIL) at ODUGlobal, a Professor of Instructional Technology, and the Director of the Virtual Reality Lab at Old Dominion University (ODU), she brings unrivalled expertise to FODES 2024.

With 30 years of experience in education and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina, Dr Crompton is recognised among Stanford's Top 2% Scientists in the world and has received numerous awards in the US and in England for her outstanding contributions to technology integration.

Dr Crompton's most recent publications include her research on global perspectives on teaching with technology, the implementation of virtual reality in organisational learning, technology integration in the digital age, preparing teachers to effectively integrate technology in education, universal design in online education, educational technology research during the Covid-19 pandemic, higher education faculty perceptions of chatGPT and many more!

30 November marks the first birthday of the launch of Chat GPT and the beginning of a revolution of how we teach and learn with AI. The online symposium , "Working with AI (ChatGPT one year later)" will explore the ethical, educational, and research implications of ChatGPT and other conversational AI systems. Feedback from the AI for Teaching and Learning event showed that people liked the online "Long Lunch" format, so this symposium will run from 11:30 to 14:30 South African Time (GMT+2) on 30 November.
