😴How much sleep does my child need?😴
This is often a question many parents wonder about, and I think many kids are not reaching the recommended amount of sleeping hours needed. Sleep is just as important to your kids' development and well-being as healthy food and exercise.
😴So what are the recommendations?😴
The guidelines posted in the Journal of Clinical sleep medicine are:
🥱4-12 months - 12-16 hours
🥱1-2 years - 11-14 hours
🥱3-5 years - 10-13 hours
🥱6-12 years - 9-12 hours
🥱13-18 - 8-10 hours
Please note these include daytime naps and evening sleep combined.
😴Why is enough sleep important?😴
Kids are different, but when it comes to sleep, they need a lot of it to give their bodies time to grow and their busy little brains to reinforce all the neural connections they formed during the day.
It also:
💤 Improves attention
💤 Improves behaviour
💤 Improves school performance
💤 Improves emotional regulation (outbursts, tantrums, and meltdowns)
💤
😴What are the risks of my child not getting enough sleep?😴
😪Poor concentration
😪Challenging behaviour
😪Poor school performance
😪Increased injuries
😪Health effects like obesity and high blood pressure
😪Increased susceptibility to infections, making them ill more often
😪Depression and anxiety
Lack of sleep can also cause more night terrors and nightmares. Then the poor sleep cycle continues.
😴How to let your child sleep more😴
🛌Talk to your kids about why sufficient sleep is essential for their bodies.
🛌 Do not use sleep as a punishment or reward. Sleep is a normal, necessary requirement for adequate growth, and your kids should understand that. Don’t punish them by letting kids go to bed earlier or reward them by sleeping late. They should have a set bedtime and wake-up time during school days. On weekends and holidays, they should be permitted more bendable sleep rules, but you should still have boundaries and keep up sleep hygiene and routines.
🛌Make getting enough sleep a priority for the whole family. That includes the parents. Set an example and switch off Netflix, and put down the phone before bedtime. Your kids watch you!
🛌Avoid over-scheduling your kids’ afternoons with extra murals. They won’t have enough time to get their homework done or get some rest, ending in them going to bed later.
🛌 Ensure good sleep hygiene. This includes no screens for at least 1 hour before bedtime. Do not put their computer or a television in their room. Get an old-fashioned alarm clock and let them leave their phones outside their room to resist temptation.
🛌Have a solid bedtime routine, even for older kids. This routine lets their bodies know to start producing Melatonin, which will make them sleep better. We have a routine of bath, book, and bed. Make sure your routine can be used anywhere, so your child associates this with sleep wherever they are.
🛌 Make sure their sleep space is comfortable. This includes a good mattress, pillow, and bedding. Ensure the bedroom is dark and quiet during sleep time.
🛌 Keep your kids active during the day. The more they play and do physical activities and fresh air, the more likely they will be tired at the end of the day and sleep better.
🛌Get your kids to bed earlier. It might be challenging at first, but be consistent, and then they will fall into that routine. The bonus is you’ll have a few hours to reconnect with your partner or get a few things done.
🛌Keep them napping in the afternoon as long as possible. Even older kids if there is a chance between extra-murals and homework. If they resist, have them have some quiet time in their rooms on their beds, reading a book or listening to music. No screens!
😴The perfect bedtime routine😴
This routine can be used for babies, older children, and adults alike.
Remember the 5 B’s:
⏰Bath - A bath indicates to your child’s body that the day is at its end and becoming night. It’s also a gentle way to start relaxing, and we all know we sleep better when we are washed up after a hard day.
⏰Bottle/Breastfeed - For babies, this includes their bottle of milk before bed or their last feed before bedtime. Do not let your child sleep with a milk bottle, as it leads to tooth decay. For older kids, this might be a glass of warm milk or a nice cup of tea, or another non-caffeinated hot drink.
⏰Brush - Your child should preferably brush their teeth twice a day, and before bedtime is an excellent time to have the second brush. Try to do this after their milk feed or hot drink to prevent tooth decay.
⏰ Book - What an excellent way to cuddle up before bedtime, by reading a book to your child. It offers you a chance to reconnect. Even with older kids, they can use this time to catch up a bit on leisurely reading, or you can spend the time with them to have a chat about their day.
⏰ Bedtime - There is no perfect time for your child to sleep, so try sticking to a good bedtime routine and start it early enough to encourage them to fall asleep so they can get an adequate amount of hours of sleep in. Nobody can force a child to sleep.
Are your kids reaching these recommendations?
