Special thank you to / for hosting a guest lecture to our third year's. Getting some insight into the South African magazine industry helps our students complete one of their final year semester projects; a magazine proposal.
We love catching up with industry friends, especially when they're alumni! ๐๐โค๏ธ
The Department of Information Science's annual Project Day is taking place on the 30th of October. On this day our final year students get the chance to present their magazine proposal and commissioning project to invited industry representatives. The event takes place in the Rautenbach Hall at the Aula and anyone is welcome to attend!
Choose UP Day took place yesterday. We had a great time meeting prospective students and sharing our passion with them. ๐คฉ

BIS Publishing studies in the Department of Information Science at the University of Pretoria is proud to present our annual webinar for 2023.
This webinar aims to foster knowledge exchange around childrenโs books and childrenโs book publishing in South Africa. Facing both opportunities and challenges in a multicultural country, this webinar aims to explore all facets of childrenโs book publishing. We invite industry professionals, educators, and scholars to examine critical issues around the childrenโs book publishing industry.
This webinar encourages presentations with the following list of possible topics for papers:
-Technology and new ways of presenting content to children, encouraging reading culture and improving literacy
-Translations and co-productions
-Accessibility in terms of languages, cost of books, infrastructure
-Issues around inclusivity in childrenโs books, for example illustrations, themes, and genre development
This webinar is taking place on Wednesday 20 September 2023 via Zoom.

The previously banned book by D.H. Lawrence has been adapted into a film by streaming house Netflix. Originally published in 1928 but an uncensored wide spread version only came about in 1960. The book was banned in a number of countries for obscenity. Today the romance novel is considered a Penguin Classic thanks to the liberal writing of Lawrence and freedom of expression.

The Nielsen BookScan report of 2022 has proven that South Africa's most read genre in non-fiction, specifially political books.
Jacques Pauw's & NB Publishers The President's Keeper (2017) an Our Poisoned Land (2022) are titles that have enjoyed this preference set out by South African readers.
To quote our course coordinator, Prof Beth le Roux, from a 2019 News24 article titled 'Why nonfiction books dominate bestseller lists in South Africa:
"...the interest in political and current affairs titles reflects a nation trying to make sense of its tumultuous political environment".

Ms Samantha Miller is celebrating 10 years at UP!
"I have been at UP for 10 years, but my permanent appointment only started in 2018 when I got my Masters degree. I thought I will be teaching my students, however, I was surprised to learn so much from them in exchange rather! Seeing these students grow into passionate and intelligent publishing visionaries of change is special. Iโm honoured to be part of the industry and adding value in any way possible."
