Scam Alert – Fraudsters posing as SA Police Officers/Law officials

Insurers have been made aware of two scams targeting insurance claimants whose motor vehicles have been reported stolen.
1. Fraudsters posing as police officers contact claimants and inform them that the stolen vehicle has been recovered in an adjacent province, and ask for money to tow the vehicle from that province.
2. Fraudsters posing as police officers contact claimants whose vehicles have been recovered and inform them that money is required to provide a police clearance certificate.

In both variations, the sums requested are below R5000 and payment can be made via an E-Wallet transfer or deposit at Pick and Pay or Checkers.

We call on all policyholders to deal only with their insurers, to remain alert to the possibility of fraud at all times, and to report any suspicious activity to their insurer.
