8 TIPS FOR SAVER DRIVING

www.ides-za.com

8 Safety Tips
Here are 8 tips to act as a reminder so that you can enjoy your car and return home safely.
Alcohol – it may seem obvious and a bit nanny-state, but drinking and driving can soon go from being cool to being extremely cruel, and even if you do not injure yourself, you may misjudge a situation on the road and kill either a pedestrian – or your passenger
Drugs – the popularity of recreational drugs has led to the term “drug driving” and again, your reactions and judgement may be affected in ways in which you are not aware after you have taken recreational drugs – feeling mighty on the dancefloor does not necessarily translate to being the boss behind the driving wheel
Medications – prescribed and over-the-counter medications can all affect your driving, so make sure you know of any possible effects of medications before you set off, including adverse effects between different medications you might be taking – and especially whether they can cause drowsiness
Road rage – try not to drive when angry and stressed, which can mean making snap decisions which might turn out to be a misjudgement – if you find yourself muttering at other drivers and cutting them up or going too fast, take a break and have a rest for 15 minutes
Rhythm – good driving is all about rhythm – remember all the things your instructor said about changing gear smoothly, cornering smoothly, braking smoothly at junctions and not doing wheelies when the traffic lights turned green again: this was all to make you a safer driver. The more smoothly you drive, the more in control of your vehicle you will feel and the more efficiently your car will respond – crunching gears and screeching brakes are a sign you need to concentrate and get your rhythm going, so try a refresher driving course
Speed – watch your speed at all times and don’t be overconfident on the road at speed. Many drivers forget to keep an eye on the speedometer – hence the roadside warnings about slowing down which have now been installed on many roads. Accidents at speed are more likely to kill or seriously maim drivers, pedestrians, car passengers and cyclists or motorcyclists, so keep an eye on the speedometer at all times
Showing off – if you have just passed your test, or have a new car – or are driving someone you would like to impress – the temptation is to forget about being a safe and nerdy driver and flex those rally skills to impress. Don’t – not only will you be a more dangerous driver, you will not look half so impressive with the rear end of your vehicle sticking out of a hedge and your passenger potentially seriously injured…or worse
Tiredness at the wheel – driving is tiring because it requires intense concentration and is also stressful – without realising it, you are constantly assessing the road ahead and making decisions that will save your own life and those of others. If you begin to feel tired, stop for a short break and look out for a café or service station where you can get a coffee. It is a good idea to take a vacuum flask of coffee on long journeys – and a blanket for nap if you need one. Plan where you can stop for a break before setting out on a long journey and never drive if you feel drowsy, your head is nodding with tiredness, or you feel unable to concentrate properly.
Injuries in road traffic accidents are one of the most common causes of personal injury compensation claims, so do not take chances with your own safety or that of other road users.

Simulators, give hope to drivers with disabilities

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University (SU) acquired a special purpose driving simulator to assist with the screening, training and assessment of at-risk drivers. The Division of Occupational Therapy at SU considered quotations specifications for driving simulators from the United States, United Kingdom and South Africa. TMI Dynamatics’ vSIM C200, part of the Interactive Driver Education System (iDes® ) suite of driver training products, was selected as SU’s simulator of choice as it offered good physical fidelity and the opportunity to include South African driving conditions for ecological validity, whilst being the most affordable product.
The vSIM C200 SP comes with a new software module to assist in determining driver fitness. The nine tests developed, which include aspects necessary to be able to drive a vehicle e.g. memory, visual perception, visual scanning, upper limb and lower limb function and processing speed shall help the USeBenzA staff gather empirical data about the severity and limitations of the different types injuries assessed. The simulator’s controls were modified to allow for hand controls and an automatic gear changer was fitted to enable people with paraplegia, amputees, stroke, head and spinal cord injury to operate the simulator similarly to a real vehicle.
Together with Lizette Swanepoel, occupational therapy manager at Usebenza Assessment Centre where the simulator is housed, Prof Sherrilene Classen, Director of the School of Occupational Therapy, Western University, Ontario, Canada, assisted in the strategic planning of the use of the simulator for clinical and research purposes. Prof Classen, who is an Extra-ordinary professor at Stellenbosch University, is a rehabilitation scientist who uses driving simulators as research tools for driving assessment and intervention. Prof Classen, was pleasantly surprised with the low latency and high accuracy of the driving controls in the vSIM C200 SP and was quoted saying “This simulator has the most realistic brake I have experienced in a simulator, and the calibration among the primary controls and the visuals is well done”.
TMI Dynamatics wishes Stellenbosch University all the success with their new simulator and will provide them with the support and expertise they need to fulfil their clinical and research roles through the use of the driving simulator. For more information on the USeBenzA Assessment Centre at the Stellenbosch University Tygerberg Campus, contact 021 938 9022.

CLUTCH CONTROL

Learning clutch control is probably one of the most important aspects of the whole driving experience. The main cause of stalling the vehicle is either too much clutch or too little petrol.

The way I teach clutch control would be to select your gear (the handbrake would of course be up to prevent rolling). Press on the accelerator first to get the engine to run at a higher idling speed. Keep it at a constant idle speed. Listen out for the sound of the engine that you are not giving too much petrol. Now start adding the clutch to where you feel a tugging on the vehicle as if it wants to move. Now keep the clutch steady, release the handbrake and the car will move away. Only add more clutch once the car has started moving. Once it has moved away take your foot completely off the clutch and away you go.
