The truth, always get the basics right and preserve the longevity of your horse, it takes the time it takes, rushing things will let the foundations break
Preserve Your Horse’s Well-Being: Master the Basics Before You Move Up the Levels
Horses are incredibly tolerant and giving creatures—a quality that makes them vulnerable to being pushed too far, too fast, often in pursuit of human ambitions. Meeting their basic needs is just the beginning. True horsemanship requires that we consider every step of their training with care.
One of your primary responsibilities is to maintain the purity of your horse’s paces. But what does this really mean? The walk should have 4 beats, the trot 2, the canter 3, and the gallop 4. The hind leg should reach under, the poll should be the highest point, and the head should always be in front of the vertical. Any deviation from this suggests a biomechanical issue that could put your horse at risk of injury. Even in photographs, where only a moment is captured, impure paces can reveal underlying problems—this is true in all disciplines.
When it comes to jumping, fixing behavioural issues requires more than just changing tack. Bigger bits and martingales won’t stop a horse from bolting, and whipping won’t make a hesitant horse more confident. These behaviours are cries for help, not challenges to be met with force. Equipment like crank/flash nosebands can exacerbate biomechanical issues, limiting a horse’s ability to move its tongue and jaw, which is essential for proper hind leg engagement.
If your horse is bolting or refusing, it’s a clear sign that they need help. Going back to basics might be the key to unlocking their potential without risking injury or burnout. The beauty of horses is that they are retrainable. However, if these signs are ignored, it could lead to serious problems down the line.
Before you consider moving up the levels, take our Ultimate Test of Your Jumping Canter. These 3 essential exercises will help you determine if you and your horse are truly ready to progress safely, without overfacing either of you. Download it now and ensure you’re on the right track.

That face 😍
Wow, this was quite interesting from the rider survey. Hopefully, this will be helpful, and you don't feel alone in your journey.
The one thing that came out quite strongly on most of the answers was overthinking, from the time you get into the arena and during your ride, be it a good or bad ride.
Worrying about what will and is happening, over focusing on multiple things at once.
Getting frustrated when you can't get anything right.
On a good note, everyone understands the coaches instruction.
Overthinking leads to the mental and physical reactions of most riders.
The key is a neuteral mind set which leads to a neutral body that relates through to your horse. Only focus on one thing at a time, your focus should be on your horse every step, very little on yourself, feel what's under you, without thinking of a gazillion things at once.
If your seat and ex*****on of aids are bothering you, fix one thing at a time. Be kind to yourself and your horse. We often give the wrong que and the horse gets confused.
As a coach, I have seen how so much can go wrong with a ride when the mind is like a washing machine. Your horse picks up the tiniest tension and responds to that.
Take a breath, don't overthink, train your brain, try not to imagine your planned ride, let it happen. As you go along, focusing only on one thing at a time, relaxation in you and your horse, when you have that do the second step and so on and so on.
This is difficult to do. As soon as you feel that tension is rising, your body gets tight, the frustration rising, STOP THINKING, breathe and focus on one small thing, and go back to basics.
Non of us are perfect, yet we have the power to change our mindset, the power to be open to learning, the power to listen and absorb, if there I a but in your response, you won't get it right, if there is a let's give it ago you are riding with your mind and not your washing machine. It takes lots of practice to do this, yet you are all worth it, team work is dream work.
Happy riding
