This Day, we are reminded of the critical role young people continue to play in shaping the future of our nation. It is a day to celebrate their potential, recognise their achievements, and reaffirm our commitment to equipping them for success.
Youth Day holds significant importance to our country. It commemorates the courage and resilience of the students of 1976, whose bravery in the face of adversity paved the way for the freedoms we all enjoy today. It is our duty to honour their legacy by continuing to empower the youth of our country.
We are proud to have invested R149.2 million in bursaries, training, and internships, demonstrating our dedication to fostering a generation of skilled and empowered individuals. Through the Youth Employment Services (YES) initiative, we are making strides in empowering young people within our communities, helping them to unlock their full potential.
Here's how we are powering possibilities for the youth:
• Training Programme Success: Our training programmes have graduated 85 skilled professionals who are ready to shape and lead the industry. These individuals represent the future of our sector, and we are proud to support their journeys.
• Addressing Skills Gaps: We are supporting 54 bursars in engineering and mining, investing R1.1 million in future talent. By addressing skills gaps, we are ensuring that the youth are well-equipped to drive innovation and growth in these critical sectors.
Building a Brighter Future: Through our bridging programmes, we have assisted 22 learners and awarded 12 full-time bursaries. We firmly believe that investing in youth is investing in our collective progress
Together, let's build a stronger, more prosperous South Africa!

We also champion diversity in STEM fields, with 61% of our full-time engineering and mining bursars being black women.

We believe that a sustainable future is within our reach. As we transition from mining to greener, renewable energy solutions, our commitment to making a positive impact on our planet remains a top priority.
For the past five years, we have been dedicated to creating and preserving value for our stakeholders. By practicing environmental and social stewardship, supported by robust governance structures, we ensure the sustainability of our business and generate lasting value. Here’s how we’re making a difference:
- We’ve recycled 45,168 ML of water, preserving and reusing this precious resource to safeguard our environment
- Since 2020, we’ve contributed R5 million annually towards rhino conservation, playing a crucial role in protecting these magnificent creatures from extinction.
- Our dedicated efforts have resulted in a 9% reduction in absolute Scope 1 emissions and a 12% reduction in Scope 2 emissions, helping to mitigate climate change and reduce our carbon footprint.
- We’ve cleared 2,872 hectares of alien vegetation, allowing native plants and wildlife to flourish once more in their natural habitats.
- With R63 million invested in climate change research and development, we are leading the way in minimising our environmental impact and innovating for a sustainable tomorrow.
Our mission extends beyond mining. We are investing in renewable energy projects, reducing our carbon footprint, and striving towards carbon neutrality. Together, we can power a cleaner, greener future.
Join us in celebrating by supporting initiatives that protect our environment and promote sustainability.
As a diversified and renewable energy solutions company, we're committed to minimising our environmental impact and fostering a healthy planet. This extends to safeguarding the biodiversity of the ecosystems where we operate.
We strive to reduce impacts on biodiversity through conservation and building resilience against climate change, which also contributes significantly to biodiversity loss. Such losses have significant potential consequences for businesses and communities as biodiversity is the source of natural resources and provides important ecosystem services. We also believe that biodiversity loss will also impact on our ability to generate economic, social and environmental value.
Our commitments thus far include the implementation of nature based solutions that enable biodiversity protection and restoration. In May 2024, we planted 12,000 Spekboom trees (6,000 trees for each operation) on our properties surrounding the Grootegeluk mine in Lephalale and Leeuwpan mine in Delmas. These remarkable trees, not only capture carbon dioxide but also create a thriving habitat for local wildlife, promoting biodiversity and contributing to a healthier ecosystem.
Our goal is to continuously contribute to the preservation of our planet’s rich biodiversity!

Happy Workers' Day!
At Exxaro, safety isn't a priority, it's the unwavering foundation of our success. Our commitment is evident in our zero-fatality goal, achieved through comprehensive safety measures like our Khetha Ukhuphepa campaign, as well as our recent 2024 CEO Sustainable Impact Summit which saw us down tools for a day at our Matla mine in Kriel, and sit down with over 5000 employees to better understand how we can make safety within and beyond the mine gate a reality for all our employees.
But safety is just the beginning. We foster a healthy, rewarding work environment where employees make a real impact.
Safe, healthy, and empowered colleagues are the key to positive change in Africa and beyond. Happy World Safety and Health Day!
Happy Freedom day!
Today serves as a reminder to us as South Africans of the immeasurable sacrifices that paved the way for our freedom as a country. It is a day for us to reflect on the efforts and courage of our national heroes and their vision for a brighter South Africa for all.
Our purpose to power better lives in Africa and beyond supports this ethos, and it guides us to empower those around us, so we can create greater impact and drive change in our sphere of influence.
Freedom to us also means economic self-determination - which we encourage through our Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) programmes that provide small business owners with support to better scale and develop their businesses. In 2023, we saw a 17% increase in community investments, totalling R1.9 billion. Of this, R1.48 billion was directed towards supporting black SMMEs through local procurement and ESD. Our ESD programme has been empowering youth and women-led businesses since 2018, benefiting communities across Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal.
