The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in South Africa is one of the leading scientific and technology research, development and implementation organisations in Africa.
On 2 and 3 September 2024, The Marine and Coastal Operations for Southern Africa and Indian Ocean (MarCOSIO) consortium, in partnership with and SASSCAL.org, concluded the successful two-day student exchange workshop as a lead-up to the GMESAfrica Southern regional workshop in Mombasa, Kenya.
Targeted youth and female postgraduate students in science, , , environmental science, and related fields, were introduced through training the Copernicus programme and its marine-related data streams, showcasing the role of Earth Observation in the Agenda 2063 and the GMESAfrica programme.
The workshop covered essential topics such as marine spatial planning, science-policy integration, and coastal development. The second day concluded with an insightful visit to the Mombasa Marine Park, where students explored the practical applications of Earth Observation in coastal resource management.

and SASSCAL.org are co-hosting the and Africa Southern African Regional student exchange workshop from 2 - 3 September 2024, at the PrideInn Paradise Beach Resort & Spa in Mombasa, Kenya. The theme of the two-day workshop is: Enabling sustainable development and inclusive growth using Earth Observation technologies towards Agenda 2063.
More than 30 students from Madagascar, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique are attending the workshop.

Recently, hosted a session on Biomanufacturing Workforce Development and Training Initiatives at the BIO Africa Convention in Durban, aligned to the African Union’s Partnerships for African Vaccine Manufacturing’s goal to produce 60% of the vaccines administered on the African continent locally by 2040.
A panel discussion highlighted key offerings and challenges for a proposed Biomanufacturing Workforce Training Center – a strategy to cover the entire value chain by a global consortium of partners. Successful Centers are planned to be announced at the Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA), 26 – 29 November 2024 in Rabat, Morocco.
This month, joins South Africa in celebrating women as active agents of change and social transformation. The commemoration also allows us to take stock of achievements and the challenges that remain while mobilising support for the continued advancement of women.
Meet CSIR senior technologist, Sumaya Khan, who is the definition of resilience and passion, as shown by her steadfast commitment to making a difference.
