The 9th of August is a day dedicated to remembering and celebrating the women of South Africa who marched (in 1956) to Pretoria to petition against the country’s pass laws- laws that required South Africans defined as “Black” to carry internal passports (passbooks) that served to maintain population segregation, control urbanisation, and manage migrant labour during the apartheid era.

Happy women’s day to all you strong, smart, beautiful, brave, talented women. You are phenomenal! 🤍🍃

The 1st of May is an international holiday for workers (or as some would call it: Labour Day), with each country celebrating it for a different reason. In South Africa, Workers’ Day aims to celebrate the work that was done by trade unions and other labour movements in the fight against the Apartheid Regime. Initiated after the first universal elections in 1994, it was celebrated for the first time the year after, 1995.

30 years ago on this day, South Africans of all ages (over 18) and racial backgrounds were given the freedom to elect the president they deemed suitable to lead them, thus officially ending the apartheid regime and introducing a new constitution. Happy Freedom Day, South Aaaa. ✊🇿🇦
