Hierdie konsert bevat gedeeltes uit die Simfonie no. 25 en 29, Don Giovanni Ouverture, die Serenade vir blasers in B-mol majeur, K. 361, twee van Mozart se bekende arias gesing deur sopraan Ilze van Staden en twee gedeeltes uit die klavierkonserte no. 20 en 22 met solis Heinrich Sutton.

GROWING LEEKS IN YOUR BACKYARD🌱

🌱 Sowing time:
Frost Areas: Spring, Summer & Autumn
Frost Free Areas: Winter, Spring, Summer & Autumn

☀️ Location: Full sun

👉 Sow seeds directly, about 1 cm deep.
👉 Sow seeds 10 cm apart in rows. Rows must be 30 cm apart.
👉 If planted too close to each other, thin the plants out when it reaches 8 cm in height.
👉 Keep moist at all times.
👉 Harvest after 130 days. (about 4 months)

💡 Pro tip: Keep in mind that your soil should be well-draining, deeply-tilled and heavily fertilised. The soil should be drawn up around the plants so that the stems are always well covered, referred to as blanching.

MUSTARD FLORIDA BROADLEAF🥬
Mustard Florida Broadleaf, with its broad, flavourful leaves and bold peppery taste, is not to be confused with the mustard condiment made from mustard seeds. ☝️

This versatile green can be enjoyed fresh in sandwiches and salads or cooked in various dishes. Often used as a substitute for Swiss Chard, Florida Broadleaf thrives best as a spring crop but can be planted year-round in frost-free areas. Rich in nutrients, it can be harvested in about 50 days.

💡 Tip: For tender baby greens, harvest the leaves early.

👣 Traffic is one of the biggest contributing factors to the compaction of soil and the resulting poor growth of all turf types.

Compaction of soil causes:
1️⃣ Poor water pe*******on into the soil profile, resulting in less water being available for the grass plants.
2️⃣ Poor aeration of the soil profile – roots need oxygen to grow.
3️⃣ Depletion in the wanted micro-organisms in the soil – these organisms release nutrients needed for uptake by the plant for the growth process.
4️⃣Poor root development and weak plants

Solutions to reduce traffic impact:
✅ Setting paving stones
✅ Using sleepers in the grass
✅ Simply mowing over the top

Irrigating a newly sown lawn

Let us share our solutions! 💡

A few factors influence the amount of water required in the early stages:

1️⃣ Weather:
The higher the temperature, the more frequently you need to irrigate.

2️⃣ Position:
Sunnier areas dry out more quickly and need more frequent irrigation.

3️⃣ Soil type:
Sandy soil dries out quickly. It needs more frequent irrigation. Clay soil holds water and tends to be over irrigated.

Our general recommendation (taking the above into consideration):

💧 Irrigate twice a day:
In the early morning for approx. 10 minutes (4-6mm)
At noon for approx. 6 minutes (2-3mm)

⚠️ Look out for:
👉 Puddles. It should be avoided as they indicate saturation of the soil and no oxygen to the roots.
👉 The top 2cm must stay moist. This is essential until the plant develops a root system.

Removal of Weeds

Let us share our solutions! 💡

🌱 It is best to spray the existing grass with a non-selective w**d killer, such as glyphosate. Ask a chemical supplier for trade names. Glyphosate is absorbed by the leaves and translocated to the roots. It does not have a residual effect in the soil. This type of herbicide kills anything green, thus, take caution and be careful when you spray.

🌱 Wait for a week or two for the grass to go completely brown before removing. You may need to spray more than once.

🌱 Remove the dead grass by mowing on your lowest setting and then digging out the rest.

🌱 Maintaining a healthy lawn through proper watering, fertilization, and aeration can help prevent w**ds from taking hold. Healthy grass is better able to compete with w**ds for nutrients, sunlight, and water. Also note that regular mowing can help keep w**ds in check by preventing them from flowering and setting seeds. Set your mower to the appropriate height to avoid stressing your grass and allow it to shade out w**d seedlings.
