(This is an anonymous post from a group. I just wanted to share as I can relate)

My 2 cents as n Pro Makeup Artist who is internationally qualified in bridal, stage & film makeup with almost 10 years experience.

I regularly see photographers, vendors, florists on here complaining about how they are treated & not respected.

Makeup Artists & Hair stylists are without a doubt the most under-rated, underpaid and under respected vendors on these groups.

We work for anything from 1 hour to 8 hours on the bride and her entourage, we deal with all sorts of people, not just the bride. We have to deal with Bridesmaids who are fussy and downright rude. We have to deal with other vendors who interrupt our work and then the bride ends up being mad at us for not being on schedule. We deal with venues who chop & change our work areas or rooms without anyone letting us know. We work with entourage members and often brides, who don't follow our instructions to prep hair and face the day before or of the event.

We have to drive (most if the time) to remote locations sometimes provinces away.

You expect your makeup to last a full day (from whenever we're finished to whenever your party stops), look good in ALL types of lighting, look good on photos and doesn't budge with the first tear that falls. You also expect top end luxury or Pro Products (which is a fair demand, because most professionals DO NOT use drugstore brands)

We don't get offered food, we don't get offered accommodation, and we don't get offered anything to drink (some of the brides we deal with do offer these things, and they are truly beautiful souls & believe me when I say - YOU MAKE OUR JOBS WORTH IT.

Yet, on a daily basis in these groups and via telephonic communication brides will tell us we are unreasonably expensive, we cost a arm and a leg, we are taking advantage of them, we are overpriced, we don't know what were doing because our quotes are too high, or we should give them discounts (we're told too not asked) etc. etc. etc.

There is a going rate amongst professionals, and by professionals I mean people who will meet all of the requirements for your makeup mentioned above and have experience. The rate is not cheap, and yet I'm sure most other Pro's will agree, is far below what we are worth. But everyone out there thinks they can pick up a brush one day and become a makeup Artists (granted some of them do nice makeup - but it's not just about how the makeup looks afterwards). For a lot of the professional products or ranges, you cannot even purchase without a qualifications and don't get me started on what those products cost. But we use them, because we have a standard.

We're lucky if we get to make a profit of R250 for a day's work. (That is minimum wage - for a skilled and qualified profession)

So why not, start with posting your budgets? The right people will find you.

- But targeting and insulting a vendor who actually plays one of the most important roles of your day, is very unfair. We have hard jobs, and a lot of us are losing interest because we are treated like actually 💩 and walked over. All we really ask for on the day we make you look the part for everything, is that you treat us with respect. That's all.

I am a bride to be myself, and with years of experience in this industry I have already allocated one of my canceled RSVPs seats to my makeup artist. I feel like this is the least I could do. I paid for someone's food, and I'd rather offer it to someone who is making my day special than a plus one I don't know from a bar of soap.

There will be snack platters on the day, and I wil make sure to have a plate for her to grab from if she gets hungry, and you can be sure she'll be given bottles of water and offered some drinks once she is done. After all, paying for everything we have for this big day, I wouldn't be able to leave the room without my face and hair done and look like 💩 in a castle.

Be kind, be courteous, and PLEASE respect the people who play a role in your big day.
