Leading with empathy.......

Story time. Some years back, I was tasked with thanking and presenting a gift to the graduation guest speaker at the end of our management development program. I had just finished a very intense six week management development program and I was looking forward to going back to my team and implementing everything that I had learnt on this program. The guest speaker was a physicist with vast knowledge on neuroscience. His talk was on connecting the dots (neurons) in decision making. By the time he finished his speech, all I knew was the extent of my own ignorance 😂. I dumped my prepared speech and all I could say in my thank you speech was “ we have learnt a lot in the past six weeks but you Sir have just shown us how little we know. What I now know for sure is the more I learn, the more I realise how little I know”.

You don’t have to know everything to lead, but having empathy will definitely work in your favour.
