Thank you NinetyOne for including us in this year’s NinetyOne Adviser Forum where our Head of Distribution, Alan Yates, presented on the reasons to be optimistic about the market outlook while also emphasising the importance of downside protection.
While the future certainly appears brighter than it did a year ago, we’re mindful of the potential bumps in the road. We will continue exploring ways to help our clients navigate these challenges effectively while delivering the best of both worlds: solid returns without sleepless nights.

Peregrine Capital | Fund Returns | September 2024
Our flagship High Growth and Pure Hedge QI funds delivered net returns of 8.5% and 5.5% respectively for the third quarter of 2024. This compares with the JSE Capped Swix All Share Index, which gained 9.6% in the quarter. It is worth noting that the strong fund returns for the quarter were generated while assuming far less risk than the market as a whole.

Today, on International Day of the Girl Child, we had the privilege of hosting 20 brilliant young ladies from Minerva Secondary School in Alexandra for the CFA Society South Africa Day of the Girl 2024. This initiative opens doors for these bright minds to explore the world of finance, especially the dynamic investments industry, giving them a real-world glimpse into the exciting roles and opportunities available.
A huge thank you to CFA Society South Africa for making this incredible event possible and a heartfelt thank you to our amazing team: Tania Formilan, Anton Smit, Alan Yates, Jamie White, Nicole Baron, Genevieve Field, Gugulethu Pesha, Kristen Koen, Danni Dixon, Mahlatse Nkoana, Monica de Beer, and Felicia Mlanjana, who generously shared their time and expertise to inspire and empower the next generation.
The future is bright, and it belongs to these girls! We're honoured to support them on their journey.
A special thanks to our supporters who joined us and our Portfolio Managers (David Fraser, Justin Cousins, and Simon Steyn, CFA) at our Peregrine Insider Investment Update today. The conversation, facilitated by Alan Yates, was a great mix of market insight from our investment team in addition to information around our core values which drives our investment process.
Peregrine Capital | Fund Returns | August 2024
In August, equity markets ended the month up, continuing their expansion despite the considerable intermonth volatility. The MSCI All Country World Index returned +2.5% and the S&P500 +2.4%, in USD. Locally, post-election optimism persisted, with the JSE Capped SWIX producing +1.3% in ZAR.
The Peregrine Capital Pure Hedge and High Growth Funds ended the month in positive territory, driven by strength in real estate and communication services holdings. The strong performance of both local and international markets meant that equity hedges were detractors to the funds’ performance.
Portfolio positioning remains balanced, and we continue to focus on actively identifying dislocations in asset prices to capitalize on pair trading opportunities. This strategy allows for flexibility in gross exposure without increasing exposure to market risk, a prudent approach given the ongoing market uncertainties.

Together with other industry experts, they discussed the growing role of hedge funds in retail portfolios, emphasising their flexibility compared to traditional long-only unit trusts.
Strategies like short selling and leverage, coupled with increasing regulation, are making hedge funds more accessible to retail investors. Additionally, hedge funds offer diversification, potential for higher returns, and improved risk management, providing new ways to enhance portfolio performance in today's complex markets.

Unveiling the Power of Compounding: Your Path to Wealth Through Hedge Funds. By Anne Holding, Investment Specialist.
At its core, compounding is the process by which returns on an investment generate their own returns. Imagine a snowball rolling down a hill, growing larger as it accumulates more snow.
Read Anne’s article below to find out more about how Peregrine Capital uses the powerful tool of compounding through our hedge funds to help our clients achieve risk-adjusted returns and financial success through the performance of our funds.
Harnessing the power of compounding Your path to wealth through hedge funds.
AJ Snyman, our Investment Analyst, presented his talk ‘Smooth seas don’t make goods sailors’ at this year’s Investment Think Tank event series held in Pretoria yesterday. His presentation highlighted the fact that hedge funds have a unique and differentiated ability to not only weather storms but to thrive amidst a storm. When the a recession hits, volatility rocks the market and a market drawdown comes, hedge funds have the right tools at their disposal to shield investors from volatility, protect them against the downside and ultimately generate returns regardless of the "weather conditions."
The event has been designed to cater to the needs of financial managers operating outside of South Africa’s main business centres and features numerous presentations from a wide array of investment managers and discretionary fund managers, as well as several moderated panel discussions that are lively and topical.
If you’re attending the Investment Think Tank events in Mbombela - 15 Aug, Potchefstroom - 20 Aug, Bloemfontein - 22 Aug, Durban - 27 Aug and Port Elizabeth - 29 Aug, please make sure to meet our team to discuss our range of hedge funds and our approach to investing.
Note: tickets are sold out for these events.
Peregrine Capital | Fund Returns | July 2024
In July, global equity markets continued their rise despite the persistent geopolitical and economic uncertainties, with the MSCI All Country World Index returning +1.6% in USD. In contrast to the S&P500’s performance of +1.2%, the tech-heavy Nasdaq faced challenges, ending the month down 0.7% in USD. Locally, post-election optimism drove the JSE Capped SWIX to deliver robust returns of +4.1% in ZAR, again marking it as one of the best performing emerging markets.
The Peregrine Capital Pure Hedge and High Growth Funds ended the month in positive territory, driven by strength in industrials and government bonds. The strong performance of both local and international markets meant that equity hedges were detractors to the funds’ performance.
Maintaining a balanced portfolio positioning, our focus remains on actively identifying dislocations in asset prices to capitalize on pair trading opportunities. This strategy allows for flexibility in gross exposure without increasing exposure to market risk, a prudent approach given the ongoing market uncertainties.
