Today, approximately 23% of South Africans have any money left at the end of the month – the other 76.58% are flat broke.

Driven in partnership with ASISA Foundation are giving young South Africans an opportunity to join L+EARN Biz Programme, an online initiative that aims to develop young entrepreneurs personal and business financial literacy knowledge.

Minimum requirements for application:
- South African citizen
- Youth aged between 18-35 years
- Running an operating business for a minimum 12-months
- Annual business revenue of less than R1 million
- Household income of less than R27 000 per month

Last week was absolutely electrifying!

I got a chance to pitch Kudoti to potential investors during the 2023 AfricArena Summit in Johannesburg and hear is what I learned:

- Always pitch to build relationships.
Pitching is a chance to share your story, why you exist and more importantly to invite all those who share your values into your journey. When I pitch, my aim is to genuinely connect and build relationships with fellow entrepreneurs, investors, potential partners, etc.

- Engage with as many people as possible.
The true value of attending a conference is the opportunity to engage with the amazing individuals who are present. I have met amazing entrepreneurs like Phumi from WISI-Oi Marketplace, a female-led technology startup that promotes a sustainable way of sharing fashion, Pravashen who runs one of the biggest electronic waste recycling company in South Africa - EWaste Africa and many more.

- Have fun !
Many times as entrepreneurs we are so focused on hitting our numbers, launching, getting funding and customers to a point that we forget to enjoy the journey. Having fun with fellow entrepreneurs of even investors can lead to amazing relationships.

Last week I joined Faith, host of the Power Lunch on one of South Africa’s commercial radio stations Power FM and the topic was how Kudoti is addressing the waste crisis.

Last week I had the honour of sitting down with Hildegard Wortmann, member of the Board of Management for Audi and member of the Extended Executive Committee for Volkswagen in Nelson Mandela’s primary place of residence- Sanctuary Mandela.

Here is why:
Approximately 25% of GHG emissions globally are caused by transport and mobility. This contributes largely to climate change and ocean acidification.

As of 2026, Audi will only launch fully-electric, new models into the global market, with a mandate to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. AUDI AG's shift to electric mobility is part of a strategic realignment, to help decarbonise the planet, not only in progressing the automotive industry, but also in enabling a positive impact on the global climate change.

Here is what we discussed in the context of South Africa 🇿🇦 :

- Meaningful conversation is the first step
To effect change, we need to create more spaces where top leaders from all industries engage with relevant stakeholders (innovators, activists, government, policymakers, and more.).

- We need to redefine success metrics for industries:
New environmental key performance indicators we can hold each industry against should be introduced. For example, the mobility and transport industry should STOP using the units sold yearly as a key success metric.

- Circular Economy principles should be our guiding light:
For all industries, Food systems, Manufactured goods & consumables, the built environment, mobility/transport and more, circular economy principles should be at the core of every business model.

More than 8 years in circular economy, here is my story

- 2015: We made clothes out of waste materials.
When I was in High school, my friends and I decided to start making clothes from waste materials found in our communities. The idea won the 2015 TeenPreneur Competition.

- 2016: I and my friend invented a plastic bag holding device made from recycled waste.
This is a plastic bag holding device that lessened the pain you get when holding heavy plastic bags.

- 2016: We made home furniture from Waste (Tyres)
I had partnered with amazing entrepreneurs, together we made chairs, tables, and other useful things out of disposed tyres.

- 2017: We created bags made from recycled billboards (PVC)
Recycling advertising billboards is costly for many brands, in 2017 we made a wide variety of corporate goodies which included bags, Panchos, etc. Through running this business, I managed to pay the first year of tuition fees.

- 2018: We designed bicycles for the informal waste reclaimers
For the informal waste re-claimers found in different parts of Africa, Asia and even America, logistics is a huge problem. These individuals carry and pull heavy loads of waste hence I tested the concept of creating a recycling bicycle.

- 2019: I cofounded Kudoti
Kudoti is a data-driven digital platform which digitises waste operations, records and quantifies sustainability efforts and connects stakeholders in one centralised place. Using the platform as the digital infrastructure for a circular economy, the company foregrounds waste as a valuable resource and activates new supply chains to help industries unlock the power of circularity.

This Earth Day , I feel very sad 😔 after reading that the Government KZN flood death toll is 435, these unpredictable catastrophic environmental events are early signs of a much bigger problem.

Cogta Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma confirmed the devastating flooding that occurred in KwaZulu-Natal is a sign of climate change.

This is a great opportunity for us all to start and continue to support initiatives, organizations and even individuals combating climate change.
