The country's economy can't afford yet another company proclaiming to support township businesses through new debt facilities, while merely channeling government funds. Each year, we witness a surge of these entities imposing unreasonable terms on SMEs. This approach is fundamentally flawed as it views these businesses through a narrow, often misguided lens. Such models fail because they create a cycle of dependency rather than empowerment, burden small enterprises with challenging repayment conditions, and lack genuine understanding of the unique challenges faced by township businesses. This not only hinders the potential growth of these SMEs but also stifles innovation and economic diversity at a community level.

I’m currently reflecting on my business strategy for the upcoming year and beyond, particularly focusing on the theme of complexity in business. The past two years have been challenging, especially post-Covid, but we managed to navigate through the unexpected challenges.

One key lesson I’ve learned is the importance of minimizing complexity whenever possible. Adding complexity requires substantial management time and expertise, so it’s crucial that the benefits justify these additional efforts.

Complexity can be a significant threat to a business. Many notable business failures in the early 21st century were due to intricate contracts, complicated global interactions, and unclear financials.

Moving forward, my strategy for the new year centers on prioritizing the “Vital Few” metrics. This concept, while simple in theory, can be challenging to maintain consistently. I believe that other small and medium-sized enterprises might also be grappling with similar issues in today’s economic environment.

In the context of business, the “Vital Few” metrics refer to a focused set of key performance indicators that are most critical to a company’s success. This concept is grounded in the Pareto Principle, which suggests that 80% of outcomes often arise from just 20% of causes. By identifying and concentrating on these vital few metrics, businesses can channel their resources and efforts more efficiently, ensuring they address the factors most likely to drive success. This approach is particularly relevant for Green Scooter, as it allows us to streamline our operations, focus on core competencies, and adapt quickly in a dynamic market. By honing in on these crucial metrics, we can foster growth, enhance operational efficiency, and stay resilient in the face of economic fluctuations.
