Jenny Giffords’ golden egg, suspended between museum glass and perspex, ornate frame, and the last cortado of the day.
Conservation hinging. Eva Maziba on a refresher workshop with the best mentor, Gerda Engelbrecht. We build on the trust that we conserve and look after art.
All the pieces of the puzzle ready for this little Breezy Bailey oil on canvas. A gorgeous combination of edginess...thanks to clients who don't mind being creative!
Our assembly station full of large works for framing. Here we are preparing to line a large mdf board with canvas for a work by Sam Nhlengethwa for a corporate collection.
Perfection Friday... this beautiful Eric Mayer, 1952, watercolor in its new frame - outer walnut bevel with black detail, black spaces, painted mdf mount to hold the inner small walnut frame with museum glass. The provenance on the back was discovered when we opened the old frame. So special.
Deborah Bell’s Sentinels (2020) opened at Everard Read’s London gallery yesterday. The show runs from 3 September to 3 October and includes Deborah’s eight towering, 2.45-meter bronze Sentinels alongside the artworks that are a record of her journey into this mystical space. To have been part of this presentation of works has been a privilege. As framers, we develop a relationship with the art as their temporary custodians during the framing process. The art, resting between sheets of glassine paper, waits to emerge as if just their presence in our art draws is demanding absolute commitment to their journey. We carefully attached each piece to its linen-covered board with conservation hinging methods. The frames in the meantime are being prepared with a combination of silver spray paint, black ink and brown shellac to get the perfect look for these works. Each frame handcrafted. Each artwork presented and held. For us it was as if the gatekeepers to humanity were keeping us safe during COVID19 in our very own workshop.
Showing off our own photography with this beautiful abstract Magaliesburg image by Marianne Schwankhart in a custom made steel frame. The colorful graffiti door series by Thys Dullaart has intrigued visitors to our studio reception and always a good talking point when we challenge visitors to find the keyholes. Take a look at some of our photography reimagined in beautiful spaces. Lnk.bio for more.
This incredible Nigel Mullins, measuring 2m x 1.5m required an outrageous frame to suit the eclectic style required. The brief also required that the finished outside frame size to be 3 meters. That's really big, and meant that the frame had to add an additional 50cm all round.
The frame was made from solid Kiaat with an added gold rebate detail to highlight the gold tones in the artwork. The next layer, the "float" was made as a casing and covered with teal suede - yes you read correctly!
To hang such a work weighing all of 100kg+, we custom welded an iron pin and barrel hanging system.
Thank you for the opportunity to be outrageous!

Mixed Media on Paper
Everard Read is delighted to present TINY2020, a group exhibition with over 50 participating artists who have created diminutive gems; extraordinary works that are no larger than your average cereal box
This much-anticipated show comprises of works by artists spanning an expansive range of genres, mediums and concepts.
Their vastly different practices are brought together by their size alone, allowing a complex network of tiny narratives to emerge instead of a grand curatorial statement. Whilst none of the artists on TINY2020 usually produce work in the scale of miniature, they have accepted the challenge to adapt the way they traditionally work; the way they move their hand across the surface, the malleability of their medium, the modifications necessary to translate their concept into a smaller scale. The results are exquisite, fascinating, humorous, and tiny.
Deborah Bell draws from a range of cultures, philosophies and psychologies where the repetitive images of lions, dogs, horses and angels can be seen. These are often intermediary figures between the physical world and a higher more spiritual realm.

Proud to be framing theses works.
Proud to be associated with this amazing body of work by Bruce Backhouse.
Bruce Backhouse is an eminent landscape painter who resides in Johannesburg. Throughout his career, he has immersed himself in the vast arid interior of South Africa - the Great Karoo and the Kalahari. Backhouse took part in the Tswalu AiR - artists in residence program - in 2019 where he produced a number of paintings, which are a result of that sojourn.
Everard Read & Tswalu and proud to present an online exhibition by Backhouse entitled: ‘The Clarity of Wilderness – Tswalu.
Paintings by Bruce Backhouse’
This exhibition opens on 8 June and runs until 8 July 2020.

STEEL IS IN. This might be a picture of our stunning aloe lined entrance to our workshop in Wynberg, but please do notice our DLB-made steel stair railing 😊. Then feast your eyes on some of our recent steel frame experiments... a slick round mirror, an industrial-look canvas floater, and a smooth box frame. Practice makes perfect and we're hard at it.
When two beautiful art forms come together. Sublime. The frame : gilded pewter with rounded corners and black outer edge. The image : #55 Spotted Hyena, printed on silver iridium 230gsm (size shown 790x990mm). The subtle and complimentary use of silver and black work perfectly together. And it's for sale - link in bio.

Inspired by the detail on an old frame with copper corners, we created these silver and gold gilded profiles with a hint of black ink and a groove detail for dimension. An added rounded corner joint gives an elegant finish. Do you see one of your works in these? Tempting isn't it. Find our contact details our bio.

A sublimely beautiful hand-carved frame for this precious piece. We reversed the moulding, carving into what would essentially have been the back of the frame - by doing this we were able to create to a unique perspective and placement of the rebate. Then building up the back of the frame to create depth in the shadowing when hanging on a wall. The work is mounted on museum board and finished off with a museum grade perspex.

Velvet is back. When we were recently asked to make a simple yet out-there frame for a large contemporary artwork, we took a rounded profile and covered it with velvet. The result - an unapologetic bold statement that complimented the work perfectly.
