When arriving at Phinda Homestead guests are greeted with a stunning entrance. A circular reflection pond marks the spot where a giant Marula once stood before a fire burnt down the previous Homestead. This circular shape and the reflection of the water creates a gentle calm. To complement this circular form we created a still life, combining contemporary hanging planters made by South African designer Joe Paine, with Zimbabwean woven basket-ware and hand-made, traditional Zulu clay pots grouped on a very sleek metal which was crafted by a young South African design team.

As a designer, you need to be careful what you foresee. You are a predictor and mirror of the times in which you live.

I had so many conversations with Thabisa Mjo before releasing the statement for this work as it encompassed so much.

The pause bench launched what feels like forever but was a month ago at ⏸

It was intended to provide place for the user to belong to themselves, to find a moment of respite or reflection. Achieved by enveloping the user and designating a private and sheltered space in a public environment.

Now the world is paused indefinitely. And we are forced to shelter in place. Whether or not the world around us was designed for us to do so.

Paper Bench 🧻

⏸ Pause is an architecture | furniture hybrid which designates a place for users to pause during daily bustle. Pause is a single object for shared use, by anyone in it’s vicinity. Not unlike a dwelling, the structures function is to envelop and protect the space which we occupy. In this, what’s interesting is that the users area is the more significant part of the bench over its lifespan, not the bench itself. ✉️ [email protected] @ South Africa
