Connecting the Dots: Education Incorporated and Adaptive Technologies

Internet access is crucial for modern education, yet for many students, especially in rural and no-fee government schools, it remains out of reach. Without it, these children face the risk of falling behind as the world moves forward at lightning speed.

At Education Incorporated, we’re not just talking about the importance of connectivity—we’re making it happen. Our partnership with Adaptive Technologies is a step towards bridging the digital divide, ensuring that students stay connected and informed.

According to the 2021 NEIMS report, 80% of South African schools lacked internet access for teaching and learning. While recent updates suggest some improvement, the reality is that 20% of schools still don’t have the necessary access, which is unacceptable.

Challenges like outdated infrastructure, high costs, and gaps in digital literacy are real, but they’re not insurmountable. Through collaboration and dedication, we’re pushing forward, ensuring that more students can access the endless opportunities the internet provides.

Education Incorporated and Adaptive Technologies are working hand-in-hand to make sure that every child has the tools they need to succeed in this fast-paced, connected world.

Did you know that humans communicate using over 6,500 spoken languages or that facial expressions are universal? At Education Incorporated, we believe in effective communication's power and its role in learning and personal development.

Here are 10 fun and engaging facts about communication and humanity:

1. Humans communicate using over 6,500 spoken languages, but there are over 7,000 languages in the world.

2. The average person speaks about 16,000 words per day but can hear and understand up to 100,000 words per day.

3. Facial expressions are a universal language, with 7 basic expressions (happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, disgust, contempt) recognised across cultures.

4. Humans are the only known species to blush, a response triggered by the limbic system in the brain when we feel embarrassed or self-conscious.

5. The first known written language was Sumerian cuneiform, developed around 3400-3300 BC in Mesopotamia.

6. Humans communicate with more than just words. Nonverbal communication, like body language, eye contact, and tone of voice, accounts for 93% of the impact of a message.

7. Babies as young as 5 months old can distinguish between happy and sad tones of voice, demonstrating their innate ability to understand emotional communication.

8. Humans have a natural tendency to mimic the body language and facial expressions of those around them, a phenomenon known as the "chameleon effect" that helps build rapport and connection.

9. The average person spends 47% of their waking hours thinking about something other than what they're doing, demonstrating the human mind's tendency to wander during conversations.

10. Effective communication is crucial for teamwork and productivity. Studies show that poor communication costs organisations an average of $62.4 million per year in lost productivity.

At Education Incorporated, our partnership with Adaptive Technologies supports and enhances the unique communication needs of our students. Adaptive Technologies is a proud partner, sponsoring uncapped, unshaped fibre to enhance the education experience, ensuring our students have the best tools to succeed.

Emojis: The Evolution of Digital Expression

Emojis have come a long way from simple smiley faces to a universal language that adds colour and emotion to our online conversations. Here's a fun look at their journey alongside the internet and social media!

The Emoji Origin Story

Early Days:

Emoticons: Remember :-) and :-(? These early emoticons set the stage for what was to come.

First Emojis: In 1999, Shigetaka Kurita created the first set of emojis in Japan, featuring 176 tiny icons like hearts, smiley faces, and weather symbols.

Going Global:

Unicode Magic: The Unicode Consortium adopted emojis in the early 2010s, standardising them across all devices.

Apple's Emoji Keyboard: In 2011, Apple brought emojis to the masses with the iOS 5 keyboard, and Android quickly followed suit.

Social Media Emoji Explosion

Facebook and Instagram: Emojis became essential on social media, adding flair to our posts and messages.

Emoji Reactions: Facebook’s emoji reactions, introduced in 2016, let us express more than just a "like."

Emojis as Cultural Icons

New Emojis: New emojis reflect our diverse world every year—from skin tones to gender-neutral characters.

Emojipedia: Your go-to site for all things emoji. Emojipedia was launched in 2013 and documents every emoji update.

Fun Emoji Facts

Most Popular Emoji: The "Face with Tears of Joy" 😂 reigns supreme globally.

Emoji Movie: Yes, it exists! Released in 2017, it shows just how mainstream emojis have become.

World Emoji Day: Celebrated on July 17th, thanks to Emojipedia founder Jeremy Burge.

Emoji Art: Artists use emojis to create amazing digital masterpieces.

Word of the Year: In 2015, the "Face with Tears of Joy" 😂 was named Oxford Dictionaries' Word of the Year!

The Future of Emojis

What’s next for emojis? Think animated, interactive, and even more integrated into our digital lives. The emoji evolution shows no signs of stopping!

🌐 Fascinating Facts About the Internet You Might Not Know! 🌐

At Education Incorporated, we're always excited to share how the internet continues transforming our world. Here are some intriguing facts about this vital technology:

1. Historic Beginnings: The first message attempted over the internet in 1969 was simply "LO," part of an intended "LOGIN" that was cut short by a system crash.

2. Communication Overload: Over 300 billion emails are exchanged globally each day, underscoring the internet's essential role in our daily communication.

3. Breaking Speed Records: A 2020 experiment in Japan achieved an internet speed of 178 terabits per second, demonstrating the potential for near-instantaneous data transfer.

4. Digital Divide: Despite its widespread use, 40% of the global population has never accessed the internet, highlighting the ongoing need for increased digital inclusion.

5. Email Origins: The first system resembling email was developed in 1965 at MIT. It was used for sharing files and messages on a computer, well before the established Internet.

6. E-Commerce Milestone: In 1994, the first secure online purchase made on the Internet was a Sting CD, marking the beginning of e-commerce as we know it today.

7. Olfactory Online: Did you know you can send scents online? Olfactory technology devices can emit smells based on digital commands.

8. Wireless Fish: In 2005, researchers in South Korea developed technology that allowed pet owners to monitor and feed their fish via the Internet.

9. The Vast Deep Web: The visible internet, or the surface web, comprises only about 4% of the total web. The remaining 96% consists of databases, private academic journals, and government resources, largely inaccessible and not indexed by standard search engines.

10. The First We**am: The world's first we**am was used in 1991 at the University of Cambridge to monitor a coffee pot. This allowed researchers in the building to see the coffee pot's contents without leaving their desks, leading to more efficient coffee breaks!

Supported by our partnership with Adaptive Technologies, we ensure our students can explore and use the internet to its full potential in their educational journeys, preparing them to be future-ready.
