School Health Week is a good time to remember how important a child's nutrition is both before and during school! 🏫
During your child's school-going years, it's essential to get a good start to the day in the form of a sufficient balanced breakfast, even if it is a breakfast on the go. 🥞
A balanced breakfast means that the meal includes carbohydrate (wholewheat toast, oats, granola), protein (eggs, cheese, yoghurt) and fat (avocado, nut butters, olive oil), as well as vitamins and minerals (fruit and veg). This sets them off to school with a powered up brain and energy to spend. 🧠
It's typical for school-going children to need to eat four to five times a day - their snacks are really important, so don't skip or skimp on their lunchboxes. 🥪
Recipe Time! 🥗🌽🧅
This Thai Meatballs with Green Salad and Corn recipe created by Cathy Day and Gabi Steenkamp for their book 'Food for Sensitive Tummies' is a healthy, fresh meal that is easy to make.
Add it to your weekly meal planner - the quantities are enough for a family of four.

We are well-aware of how important food choices are when it comes to maintaining our bodies and preventing disease, but there's expanding research delving into the impacts of nutrition on mental health. 🧠
Registered dietitian, Kelly Scholtz says, "There are many established links between nutrition and mental health related to specific nutrients and their effects on the brain. There is also a significant amount of ongoing research about nutrition and mental health because nutrition has been clearly identified as an area that is independently associated with mental health.”
“This means that dietary approaches can be used as a complementary intervention along with treatment for mental health issues even in situations where other significant variables cannot be changed.
For instance, it may be easier to make dietary adjustments than to fix social situations or other sources of stress in the case of depression and anxiety. Mental healthcare professionals are increasingly including a healthy diet as one of the essential steps in the management of mood disorders, and nutrition can play a role in protecting mental health during times of both acute and chronic stress."

It’s the start of National Nutrition Week and this year’s theme is ‘Eat Right for a Better Life’.
We encourage everyone to make healthy food choices towards improved nutrition, every single day
You can rest assured that when you choose dairy, like milk, maas and yoghurt, you make the right choice every time!
Add dairy like milk, maas and yoghurt to your daily diet as a great source of calcium, protein, B-vitamins and many more important nutrients that keep you going for longer!
We celebrate National Nutrition Week every year from 9-15 October.
In 2024, National Nutrition Week is promoting the theme ‘Eat right for a better life’ to highlight how making nutritious food available in our homes, workplaces, schools, and communities can help South Africans from all walks of life enjoy a healthier lifestyle.
We make daily choices about what we eat, and this may seem nothing more than ordinary routines and habits when we have so much else that we need to think about and get done in life.
However, sometimes, we really need to stop and think about the profound impacts of what we eat. Our everyday food choices power us through a day of achieving at work or school, or not. They add to our sense of mental well-being and enjoyment of life, or not. They protect us from developing diseases and promote healing, or not.
🌱✨ This National Nutrition Week (9-15 October), it’s all about YOU. The theme Eat Right for a Better Life reminds us that every meal is a chance to live better, feel stronger, and thrive. 🥗🌟 It’s not about perfection—it’s about making choices that nourish your body and soul. Start small, start today, and take a step toward a healthier, happier you. Because when you eat well, you live well. Let’s do this together! 💚
