NRF call for bursary applications now open

The National Research Foundation (SA) has a limited number of bursaries available for full-time postgraduate studies in 2025. The deadline for application for MA and PhD candidates is 5 July. All the information is available on the NRF’s website. Navigate to: “Announcement of Calls DSI-NRF Postgraduate Student Funding for the 2025 Academic Year”
Honours applicants should keep an eye on the website for later calls.

We are excited to announce a short course in Media and Digital Policy in Africa.
This interactive course, brought to you by the University of Stellenbosch in collaboration with the Namibia Media Trust, consists of two parts, each with four modules that can be completed at a pace of one per week.
The first part, "Freedom of Expression in the African Media and Digital Policy Landscape," delves into freedom of expression, access to information, and online freedoms in Africa. It examines disinformation, issues with Internet companies' models, the impact of AI on media and journalism, and the role of civil society in driving change. Exciting news! 🎉 Two Stellenbosch University journalism honours students, Aurelia Mouton and Nkululeko Ndlovu, have been selected for the Historically Black Colleges and Universities – Africa Correspondents Corps, led by Howard University’s Centre for African Studies. even clinched the vice-president role for 2024! This program offers invaluable networking opportunities and practical experience in foreign correspondence. Congratulations to both!

Prof Herman Wasserman was recently invited to the launch of the Global Technology for Social Justice Lab at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in the US. The lab is a research hub and network for scholars and practitioners in critical technology and global studies. Prof Wasserman participated in discussions on researching disinformation in African elections, in fitting with the workshop theme on ‘Empowering Election Integrity in the Global Majority’.

The honours class finally had the opportunity to put a face to the name of Stellenbosch Police Spokesperson, Captain Nathalie Martin. Capt Martin is the go-to for all our police-related inquiries, and provided the class some knowledge about the processes of obtaining various forms of information from the Stellenbosch Police Station.
