Kleinood Farm | Home of Tamboerskloof Wines and de Boerin of Goodly Things.
On Kleinood Farm we have always put terroir first in the wine we make. So too, it is ever present in our olive oil, verjus and honey.
Why then, if one could taste terroir, could one not wear it and smell it and smell of it?
Now you can! Introducing a collection of terroir driven parfums inspired by Kleinood Farm and made by de Boerin.
To smell them, visit Kleinood Farm. Open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

The forest on Kleinood Farm, has always been hallowed ground. Small as it is, it is a place of serenity and peace. It is where you go at the end of the day to find solace, to contemplate, to dream or to cool down in the fresh clean river water. We have always kept it to ourselves, not wanting to share or disturb the quiet, to keep out the noise and protect whatever it is that we find there…

The tasting room on Kleinood is a homely extension of the winery. It captures the intimate and inviting spirit of this small and precious farm. Here we pour our beloved Tamboerskloof wines for family, friends, fans, foreigners and critics alike. An abundant and ever-changing seasonal platter is served, filled to the brim with delicious farm fare.
Visit The Tasting Room on Kleinood Farm. On a rainy day, around the long table inside the tasting room, next to the cosy fireplace. On a balmy day, next to the duck pond in the courtyard filled with roses. On a windless day, in the shade of the old Oaks, with a view of our vineyards and the majestic mountains. Here, you will need no more than a glass of wine in hand, to make life as good as it gets...

Seasonal update:
Whether the wind of change in April was the first real sign of winter, nobody knows.
What we do know, is that it blew and that it changed the landscape and the way we think about wind forever.
The winery has now become a quiet, even secretive, haven where the juice is now becoming wine in tanks and barrels. It is only in the compost yard where the heaps of dark purple skins still bear the smell of rotting fruit on which the bees forage to their hearts’ content.
However, we are now preparing for long, cold and, hopefully, very wet evenings with hearty soups or stews, home baked breads and glasses of sultry, deep red wines around the table or lazing around the fire.
This season’s delivery:
In this offering you will find a very impressive, and otherwise unavailable, collection of the beloved Kleinood Tamboerskloof Syrah, vintages 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
And, just for the sake of variety, which is the spice of life, they say, you will receive a bottle of de herder red blend 2022.
To receive this parcel, delivered to your door, join The Kleinood Table:

Added to this, you will receive two bottles of the Kleinood Tamboerskloof Katharien Syrah Rosé 2023 and bottle of Kleinood de herder red blend 2022.

All set up and ready to roll first thing tomorrow morning when we’ll bring in a small parcel of our “pan-handle” block.
Getting them in early and gently are at the top of our priority list come harvest day, which is why you won’t see any big bins or speed picking. After a year’s worth of love and nurture it would be silly to compromise on quality or expression now…

So location specific, each berry has its own fingerprint…
It took us a lot of thumb-sucking, berry squeezing and photo-taking to get to this photo, all to illustrate the simple point that our Tamboerskloof Wines are as unique and complex as any fingerprint can be. Telling a tale of individuality, singularity and expression of time and place, these wines are crafted in the vineyard and merely guided to their full potential in the winery.
The fingerprint’s not real, but it might as well be…
A thorough sampling of different Syrah sites on the farm with La Pebra, our resident Airdale. Her preliminary assessment is that the sugars are almost there and we should start harvest before the end of this week 🍇🐕
On a more serious note, we are very fortunate to be able to assess, manage, measure, test and harvest our vineyards and grapes on a micro-scale because, well, the farm’s so small…
Not only does this give us insight into the subtle nuances of each block, parcel or even row, but it also allows us to make sure we’re only bringing in grapes fit for a flagship.
Winemaking is alchemy. It is wind, rain, sun, and soil mysteriously absorbed by the vine to produce juice filled berries that we, through the fine balance between magic and science, gently coax, to become a thing of beauty in every sense of the word…
New Release The Kleinood Tamboerskloof Syrah 2019:
https://www.kleinood.com/product/tamboerskloof-syrah/
Today owner, Gerard de Villiers, winemaker, Reynie Oosthuizen, our dedicated vineyard team and everyone else here on Kleinood raise our glasses to the South African wine industry which came into existence exactly 365 years ago today, as diarised by Jan van Riebeeck himself!
We’re incredibly grateful to be part of what those first few barrels of wine matured into over the many years since - a industry all can be of 🇿🇦😊
Collectively we’ve graced the glasses of kings and queens, been paired at the finest restaurants the world over and, probably most importantly, swirled in sunsets uncountable while someone lit the braai…
We want to thank everyone, near and far, for their support. Cheers to another 365! 🥂

Free like a Friday | Our Upper Blaauwklippen Valley hosts an increasing amount of elegant and symbolic Bloukransvoëls (Blue Cranes) annually, and to say we’re honoured would be an understatement.
As important to us as being graced with the presence of South Africa’s National Bird, is the fact that population spread heralds population growth - great news for a species fresh of the “endangered” list and still high on the IUCN’s “vulnerable” list.
We look forward to continue creating a safe-haven for these beautiful birds so their population can flourish.

Each year we approach a South African artist to make a painting for the wrapping of The Kleinood Tamboerskloof John Spicer Syrah. With fascination we share in their various perspectives and experiences of the same farm. In much the same way, we find different vintages producing nuanced wine from the same soil incredibly interesting…
Jeanne Gaigher, Beezy Baily, Marlene Steyn, Jill Trappler, Stephané Conradie and Amy Rusch have participated in this project since the first vintage.
The 2017 vintage is wrapped in an artwork by Katharien de Villiers. Her love for the farm served as inspiration to combine iconic aspects of Kleinood in a playful and flamboyant collage printed on unbleached and recycled stone-paper.

“Once we started cleaning the Kleinood forest, there was no turning back…”
In return, the thankful giants and their newly-planted indigenous neighbours offer a much-needed shady haven from the sweltering Boland summer heat.
This restoration project is a slow and gentle one, and thus the Kleinood forest is not open to visitors for the moment.

Outstanding in the Field set another table on Kleinood.
Chefs Jenny Ward and Strone Henry celebrated South Africa's rich braai culture, using wood, fire, coals and smoke to cook an outstanding four-course meal with the very best local and seasonal produce.
The menu included chargrilled aubergine and smoked waterblommetjie with nasturtium pesto, fire-roasted violetta artichoke hearts with wild rosemary-infused Kleinood Farm honey, and buttermilk-marinated Ryan Boon karoo lamb shoulder with charcoal-roasted fynbos and fire-cooked mielie meal, fire-smoked baby cabbage and a tomato-onion gravy.
All served on Mervyn Gers Ceramics.
Strangers, gathered around the table from far and wide, left friends.
A truly outstanding experience!

To celebrate the release of a new vintage of our beloved Tamboerskloof Katharien Rosé, here's a peek at the Kleinood gardens - through Rosé-tinted glasses, of course:
https://www.kleinood.com/rose-tinted-glasses/
"de Boerin has been an integral part of Kleinood from the beginning – before the buildings, the wine, the tasting room – she was there when it was just a small patch of land.
The acclaimed de Boerin Extra Virgin Olive Oil was originally the only de Boerin product. Because of the nature of Kleinood, where everything happens organically and often by pure coincidence, de Boerin Syrah Verjus followed a few years later and only when our bees were happily settled came the Raw and Infused Honey."

Stellenbosch Wine Routes
In the year 2000 the small farm was very different from what it is now. Although its inherent natural beauty and charm was always there, it was, sadly, just a run down and neglected little fruit farm in a beautiful valley against a backdrop of majestic mountains and a river running through it.
It stole our hearts. We decided to give it our best.
Thus, we named the farm Kleinood; the Afrikaans word from Dutch and German origin, meaning “something small and precious”.

“Something Small & Precious”
In the year 2000 the small farm, that was to become Kleinood, was very different from what it is now. Although its inherent natural beauty and charm was always there, it was, sadly, just a run down and neglected little fruit farm in a beautiful valley against a backdrop of majestic mountains and a river running through it.
But it stole our hearts and we decided to give it our best. In good time we established vineyards and an olive grove. We then built the winery and started producing wine and then olive oil and finally, in 2008, we moved to where our hearts and passion lay.
Over time it has become a personal and highly individual project where no effort was spared in striving to produce a thing of excellence and beauty underpinned with a simple and holistic philosophy dedicated to explore, develop and use the full potential of the farm and human skills in order to produce the best Kleinood is capable of.
