Local Works
A cultural arts & crafts shop in the heart of Stellenbosch. Supporting local artists and fair trade groups.
It is a place that celebrates the colourful bright exuberance of African Art & culture; it is a soft meeting place that makes creative community possible and that celebrates life. Every handpicked item on display tells a story and invites the visitor to slow down for a moment, to breathe, to look, to touch and to listen. The diversity of art and craft works on display signifies something of the unique ethic of this remarkable little store.
Here is August’s batch of ‘Mundane Monday’ shots by friends and followers; ‘pedestrian’ pics in and around the places we live.
“’Pedestrian’ explores the nature of the ordinary and of depiction... This considered and inquisitive approach to observation stimulates engagement: engagement with the mundane and our conceptions of the mundane... The visual elements of art take the lead to reveal this ambiguity and complexity, hidden in the most commonplace scenes.” (www.petrusmaree.com)
Thanks to all this month’s contributors.
We’re excited to introduce our new exhibition, Germination, which officially opens to the public this morning!
The works in this exhibition explores the dormant terrain of potential that often forgoes a transitional phase of growth.
Participating artists include:
Ydi Coetsee Carstens,
Cecile Louw,
participants of the OIPA (Outsider/Insider Prison Art) Project,
Ron Sauerman,
Marijke Van Velden, and
Elbie Visser
Visit Local Works until 21 September to view these poignant pieces.
More to follow soon…

Mandy Johnston is a Cape Town-based multidisciplinary artist with a passion for sharing knowledge. She is the holder of various prestigious awards and her work is included in various corporate and private collections.
“I am interested in contradictions and binaries… I try to make work that is layered and accessible at various levels. I employ, interrupt, or subvert the contextual and traditional definitions attributed to materials to comment on broader societal conversations.”
For the Yield exhibition at Local Works, Johnston presents a series of semiabstract cyanotype prints that fuses organic and geometric, nature and culture.

In the spirit of Freedom Day, commemorating our country’s first post-apartheid elections (1994) and the day on which the new constitution was introduced, we wish to share this moving photographic work, ‘Nelson Mandela’s return to his cell on Robben Island IV’ (1994) by the renowned photographer, Jurgen Schadeberg.
This photograph of Nelson Mandela looking through the bars of his Robben Island Cell in 1994 was voted as one of the 50 most memorable images of the 20th century by The Photographers Gallery in London.

It’s 30 years since the start of democracy in South Africa. May we hold onto the steadfast values of our proud constitution in this month ahead of national elections 🙏🏽🙏🏿🙏🏼
Autumn has come.
The season of pensive reflection.
Time to take in the ordinary beauty of the land.

Vroegherfs
of enkel jeug, en ver was van die pyn;
laat ryp word, Heer, laat u wind waai, laat stort my waan, tot al die hoogheid eindelik vas
en nakend uit my teerder jeug verskyn.

Thenjiwe Tyulu is Local Works’ proverbial Right Hand, where she’s been actively involved for over eight years.
“What I enjoy the most is getting to know the customers and where they come from and to meet people from all around the world. I chat with them about the good stuff we have in our shop, the different artists, and all the beautiful things Africa has.”
Thenjiwe’s radiant attitude and solid work ethic ties in closely with her dream: “...to grow more with Local Works so that I can take care of my kids’ needs and their education.”
Besides for her assistance at Local Works, Thanjiwe is a committed mother. She proudlly shares that her children are the reason she wakes up in the morning; to take good care of them so that they can have a prosperous future.

On this World Day of Social Justice, a poem for our country, by James Paton (1921):
South Africa
I would not boast of thee, O Land of Ours,
Thy snow-tipped mountains, tow’ring to the sky,
Thy thousand valleys, leaping to the eye,
The veld aflame with summer’s radiant flowers.
Nor would I boast of conquests, warlike powers,
Of thousands slain, and thousands yet to die,
Of nations forced beneath thy heel to lie:
Mercy and Truth should flood thy fragrant bowers.
And Oh! I love thy landscapes and thy streams,
God made them, and His work stands as of old; Another greatness see I in my dreams.
Then, Land of mine, would’st thou have heart of gold:
That Thou, though tempted sore, deal fair and just With those whom heaven have portioned to thy trust.

Light, my light, the world-filling light,
the eye-kissing light,
heart-sweetening light!
Ah, the light dances, my darling, at the centre of my life;
the light strikes, my darling, the chords of my love;
the sky opens, the wind runs wild, laughter passes over the earth.
The butterflies spread their sails on the sea of light.
Lilies and jasmines surge up on the crest of the waves of light.
The light is shattered into gold on every cloud, my darling, and it scatters gems in profusion.
Mirth spreads from leaf to leaf, my darling,
and gladness without measure.
The heaven’s river has drowned its banks
and the flood of joy is abroad.
