Overgaauw Wine Estate

A respect for the land means we make wines best suited to our exceptional terroir – a respect itself handed down from generation to generation. Third-generation Braam van Velden initiated extensive soil mapping on the farm during the 1970s, and we continue to upgrade the vineyards and engage meticulous viticulture practises to ensure the highest quality fruit the site and vintage has to offer. In the cellar, our focus is on retaining as much of the varietal’s unique Overgaauw character as possible – with no quick fixes or cheap tricks, and a judicious use of wood.

RED WINES

Wine that is true to its roots means a deep respect for terroir. Our proximity to both mountain chains and maritime influence lends our piece of the world a unique and blessed terroir of diverse soil types and a temperate summer temperature. It’s strikingly similar to France’s Bordeaux region, and unsurprisingly, the area has become renowned for its red wine production. Overgaauw’s fine reds exemplify this distinctive terroir, with the Tria Corda, Merlot and DC Classic offering a respectful nod to the Bordeaux region, with an undeniable Cape pioneering edge.

WHITE WINES

Wine that is true to its roots means a deep respect for terroir. And at Overgaauw, it also means a deep respect for heritage – a heritage of pioneering spirit, passion for quality and a uniquely Cape-European style of winemaking. Our premium white wines include Sylvaner – a German varietal we introduced to South Africa in 1963, and which we continue to champion today as its only local producer. Originating from a single hectare of vines, the wine is lauded by experts and German tourists alike, who swear they can “taste the sunshine in the wine”.

CELLAR DOOR

The truth of our wine is in the tasting – it needs to be experienced, not just described. Our wine is meant to be sipped and savoured, shared and enjoyed in good company. And our tasting room was built for this very purpose back in 1973. The cosy farmstead space offers you a taste of our premium wines, as well as a glimpse of our family history – with Van Veldens of all ages (both real-life and photographed) to keep you company in true Overgaauw spirit.

THE SHED

At our beautiful heritage venue, celebrations take place in true Overgaauw style. It’s a style of hosting and serving that mixes both history and modernity in an understated elegance. The Shed is a sensitively restored 116-year-old building – it’s been here longer than we have. It’s witnessed many family celebrations and milestones, and it’s a treasured heirloom too good not to share. From lazy farm lunches to big birthday bashes, weddings to workshops and corporate events, the Shed and its plaaswerf are versatile hosts.
