Big year next year in Bathurst! 199 years ago today 21 ships arrived in Algoa Bay and disembarked 4 500 English expatriates (known since as the 1820 Settlers) who were destined to become a barrier on the Western boundary of the Fish River between the Cape Colony and the isiXhosa. They contributed a huge amount to the country spiritually, financially, agriculturally,culturally and scholastically. This country would be a poorer place if they had not been placed on the frontier they were subjected to. I am proud to stand up as a family member and nod to my various family ancestors who have made a contribution to that part of this country’s history and who continue to make a difference to all the people of that part of the Eastern Cape. That part of this country is a true example of how diverse cultures can integrate and coexist
