De Vlugt is a small Settlement located Halfway through the Prins Alfred's Pass. It is the only Pass in South Africa, where People live beside the Road and Trade, within the Pass.
The Area has a lot of fun activities on offer such as cycling routes, hikes, overnight stays at various accommodation establishments, the recently introduced paintball target shooting at Angies G Spot, and for the more adventurous, we have partnered with Schakat up the road, where people can play paintball against each other in the beautiful forest. (There is however no Mobile Reception, Banks or Petrol, available on the Pass! But… We do offer Wi-Fi to keep in contact with friends and family.) It is Roughly halfway along Prince Alfred Pass (R 339), as it descends to meet the River, The Historical Hamlet of; De Vlugt. Also known as Die Vlug.
De Vlugt is what remains of the dwellings of Andrew Geddes Bain and his son, Thomas, their Outbuildings and the Concentration Camp that housed the 270 or so Convicts, who laboured to Build the Pass, the early 1860's. Bain began his task on the Knysna side of the Pass, widening the tracks of elephant through the Forest, before setting up Camp Midway, in the Poort along the Banks of the Keurbooms River, to continue the demanding task of Pass Building. (a POORT is a narrow pathway through a mountain). Little has changed in De Vlugt since then.
There is a bronze plaque on a cairn at the top of the Ecca Pass, 12 km South of Grahamstown. It was erected in 1964 by the Historical Monuments Commission in honour of Andrew Geddes Bain, (1797-1864) pioneer geologist, explorer, hunter, writer and road-builder, who constructed: The Prince Alfred’s Pass, the Ouberg Pass; the Van Ryneveld Pass; the Montagu Pass; the Michell's Pass; the Gydo Pass; the Bain's Kloof Pass and the Ecca Pass, as well as reconstructing the Houwhoek Pass and starting the Katberg Pass. There is also a bronze plaque in his honour on the Summit of Bain's Kloof Pass, 7 km North of Wellington. His son Thomas also went on to follow in his father's footsteps!
The founders of De Vlugt were a group of visionary individuals who came together with a shared passion for creating a space where creativity and community could thrive. Their dedication and hard work laid the foundation for what would become a beloved cultural hub in the heart of the city. Recently, a plaque was discovered in remembrance of Andrew Geddes Bain’s Son (Thomas Charles John Bain), honouring his legacy and the impact he had. The plaque serves as a reminder of his contributions and the importance of preserving his memory for future generations to appreciate. The plaque has been overgrown and not visible at the moment, however it will be carefully maintained and cleared for others to enjoy, ensuring that this hidden gem remains a cherished part of the city's cultural landscape.
Otherwise, the peaceful Hamlet remains undisturbed, (a Small Settlement, generally one Smaller than a Village, and one without a Church!) In this Stretch of the Pass, life is about as slow as it is going to get off the beaten Track in South Africa. The old jail house (the original jail and cells of the convicts who used to build the pass) still stands and has been restored into a beautiful overnight cottage complete with solar, yellowwood furnishings and the kitchen hosts large Wood Stove & traditional ‘donkey’. We still have the original jail doors! This cottage is on the property of Angies G Spot! Come and join us for a night in this gem of a Cottage! (House sleeps 8 – 10 people in 3 bedrooms and a sleeper couch)
