UTD 2024 recap with Inov8 athlete - Nicolette, your 2024 UTD160 CHAMP⚡️🏆

“A few months before UTD 2024, I was torn between the 100km and the 100 miler. The lure of earning a bell for completing the 100 miler won me over.

The first 27km in Lesotho were spectacular but tough, with nearly 1300m of ascent at an average altitude of 3050m, the potential to push too hard on fresh legs was high. Thick mist required GPS navigation early on, and my Suunto 9 Peak Pro was spot on, though route referencing slowed me down slightly. By the Twelve Apostles descent its hard to not let go and let gravity do all the work and enjoying the views, I felt nauseous and miserable, realising it was too early for this. I went nil per os for an hour, then resumed small amounts of real food and plain water, gradually regaining strength and pace from 40km - 80km.

That night, competitors faced cold and wet conditions. I packed two Inov8 waterproof jackets, which proved essential. Soaked and losing core temperature, I stopped to put on a thermal top and dry waterproof, gaining a few more hours of comfort. Around 2:30am, as I climbed away from Swiman in driving wind and rain, I changed into thermal and waterproof pants, aided by caffeine capsules and a headlight battery change. Dawn brought weak sunshine, lifting spirits.

Between Castleburn and Mzimude, I swapped my headlight for a hot cross bun and pushed on. The last hours were a painful shuffle-hike, but the friendly Cobham aid station staff, my playlist, and stunning scenery kept me going. After just under 26 hours, I crossed the finish line, taking the top spot and ringing my first bell with a special group of ultra runners. 🗻”
