Running Technique Drills - Overview
This is a recap of the five technique drills that we have discussed over the last six weeks, with a short foreword from Mr. Eksteen himself. Some more footage of Claude demonstrating his exemplory form, definitely an image to keep in your mind's eye while running, and a quick run through of the drills that we have covered. For more detailed explanations of the drills you will find their individual video clips elsewhere on our page.

Acceleration drill
Once again, fast feet will be the result of this drill. The main focus here though is body position. In a more efficient running style, the body is angled forwards while still maintaining good posture. The forward momentum created by leaning into your run will help generate speed and assist in landing the feet in the correct position below the body’s centre of gravity. This then also causes the mid to forefoot strike rather than that being the aspect that we are concentrating on. As discussed in a the introduction to these drills. The forefoot strike is a RESULT of good technique, rather than being the FOCUS. This drill is less strenuous on the ankles and calves than the others and is excellent to incorporate in your ‘pre-event loosener’ session. Do 4-5 of these extending the surge a bit, at the end of an easy run the day before the race and it will not only help to ‘groove’ your body position but give your legs the snap they need after a rest day. While watching the clip at 20% of normal speed, pay attention to the angle of Claude’s body and how it changes. As he gradually leans in the direction of travel, gravity takes over and he starts to move forwards. The body angle is then maintained. We’ll let Claude take over: This drill helps you to learn what the 'correct' amount of lean is so that you are still in control of your movement. You will also get used to what it feels like to 'use' gravity to your advantage. DURATION: 3 X 5 of 10 - 20 meter surges.

Running Technique Drill #4 – Criss-Cross Side Running
A great drill again for learning ‘fast feet’. Good as a strength exercise for the feet and ankles and the abdominal core. A great drill for trail and offroad running where you are forced to make rapid and numerous changes of direction. As always, important to maintain good posture and focus on keeping the body still, rotating from the hips. We’ll let Claude take over: This drill teaches you to move quickly, lightly and swiftly on your fore foot from one leg to another with lots of control. This is done by initiating and stabilizing your core muscles. It also teaches you to use your ‘lean’ and to feel what it is like to use gravity to help ‘push’ you forward. DURATION: 1 set of 50 meters going one direction and then 50 meters in the other.

Running Technique Drill #2 - Leg Hop
Although ‘Leg Hop’ is fairly self-explanatory, it can be misleading. Like the first drill in the series, this one is all about moving your feet fast and landing softly. You are not trying to get height off the ground with each hop. You will notice, as we slow the clip down, that there is some altitude change but this is unavoidable as we need to gain some height, because the body starts to fall as soon as we lift our foot off the ground. It shouldn’t be the goal of your hop though. Pay special attention to the 20% speed portion at about the 1:30 mark where we zoom in on Claude’s foot. You can see an exaggerated view of what we try to achieve with a more ‘natural style of running’ as Claude’s forefoot strikes the ground, his Achilles tendon and calf muscle experience an eccentric contraction and brake his decent towards the ground. Absorbing the impact and reducing the shock on the leg. We’ll let Claude take over from here… AIM: As in the ‘Fast Feet’ drill you are concentrating on lifting the foot as soon as you feel contact with the ground without bouncing up with your whole leg and body, crucial! This time you are lifting your foot and bending your knee completely to also learn what it feels like to let gravity help drop your foot back down to the ground before you fall down. Again your feet are always landing under your body, disappearing from sight under your knee with a still, well balanced upper body. DURATION: 1 set of 10 – 20 ‘hops’ per leg.

Running Technique Drill #1 - Fast Feet
This drill is all about... well... fast feet! This is not only good for your running technique but will also be excellent for strengthening the feet, ankles and calves. Remember here that you are not trying to jump high. Your feet are only a few centemetres above the ground at anytime. We'll let Claude take over... AIM: This drill teaches you what it feels like to land on your fore foot with a very quick, soft and quiet action. It helps you to learn not to jump up and down (to eliminate bouncing). All you are doing is quickly transferring your weight from one point to another with a slightly bent knee, not with your whole leg and body. The drill will not only help you to be a more agile, fleet footed runner, but will help to develop strength and elasticity in the muscles and tendons in your feet and lower legs (calf muscles). DURATION: 1 set of 10 – 15 seconds per leg.
