Making a difference, One Yorkie at a time! In Avril's search to find Gizmo she came across many Yorkies that were lost, abandoned or unwanted.
Yorkie Rescue South Africa came into being in 2011 when the founding member Avril Culverwell experienced the theft of her Yorkie Gizmo from her property. Many of these Yorkies were kept in a caged environment in rescue centres throughout South Africa. It was these facts that stimulated the concept of a Yorkie specific rescue sanctuary, where Yorkies could be kept in a free and homely environment.
Since inception Yorkie Rescue South Africa has spread its love for the Yorkie all over the country. It has “Yorkie Angels” who:
· provide foster homes for those Yorkies who require some stabilisation,
· they rescue from streets and homes where the Yorkie has been abandoned,
· they assist Veterinarians who have Yorkies brought into their practices,
· council breeders on best practices and on how to keep in touch and ensure the safety of their production
· trace owners who have lost their Yorkies and reunite them
· care for special needs Yorkies
· rehabilitate Yorkies who come in with various behaviours
· do strict home check
· match families to the temperament of the Yorkie
· follow up regularly on the adopted Yorkie formulating a relationship with the new owner
Although Yorkie Rescue South Africa is breed specific, it is not restricted to only rescuing Yorkies. It is affiliated and associated with other rescues and shelters throughout South Africa. Yorkie Rescue South Africa will never turn a dog in need away. As a result they have rescued and homed Dalmatians, Boerboel's, Rottweiler’s, Huskies and many mixed breeds. We work in association with many SPCA’s and other rescue agents to assist them in the work they do. They in turn assist us when we have to close down puppy mills, unethical back yard breeders and puppy brokers. Yorkie Rescue South Africa endeavours to create synergy with the humans so that the canines are taken care of in the best possible way.
