The Avalon School
During our Monday Morning Meet Up (SEL meeting) last week, students had an opportunity to share their feelings about the COVID-19. Their feelings ranged from being sad, fearful and anxious. Several weeks earlier, they expressed similar feelings about the 'gassing' issue. The same was true for staff. This means that the past couple of months have been emotionally draining and stressful for both adults and students. So as children spend more time at home these next few weeks, try focusing on connections and feelings of safety.
The Lord keep you safe!

Abiyoyo Abiyoyo Abiyoyo yoyo yoyo Abiyoyo yoyo yoyo
I trust our little friends have hummed this song the whole day!. Great read for the day! Abiyoyo by Pete Seeger, a South African folk tale.
Today, Audrey reads aloud a folk tale from South Africa. Let your kids come join in the FUN as we sing the tale's song!
So, the book was "The Mitten" by Jan Brett! The story is about a small boy who loses his mitten and goes on without realising it's missing. One by one, the woodland animals find it and crawl in. The imagination was wild as the kids tried to figure out how a mole, a rabbit, a badger and other animals could all fit into a small mitten...
Even as the kids enjoyed the funny story, it turned out to be a science lesson, too. The kids learnt about habitats, the different movements made by animals and how they protect themselves from predators... nice read for every child.
Later the kids took a line for a walk on their mittens and SEE what they came up with!
Today, 25 January, 2020, the library will close at 11:30 hrs. Sorry for the inconvenience caused!
Storytime in 5 minutes time! We're waiting for our little friends. Today, we go in a foreign land with different weather conditions from ours. Our story about this little boy will take a SCIENCE twist - We'll discuss animals - their habitats and how they protect themselves. However, our little friends may push the story into another direction! We can never be sure how storytime ends...
Hello teachers out there! You can subscribe to PECS Library at K65 per month and check out up to 5 books to read aloud to your students. Call us for more details and to arrange a visit!
PECS Library can't avoid Social Emotional Learning when dealing with kids!
Yesterday's storytime was epic. Our read "The day you begin" by Jacqueline Woodson had every child identify with the main characters of the story. Everyone wanted to share about that moment when they felt alone, when they were excluded from an activity, when someone thought their food looked strange, when they were the only ones who didn't have something to share, when....The list goes on. It was good to hear kids identify a list of various feelings experienced in such situations - not good feelings. To see kids give each other comfort was the peak of the moment.
The kids were empowered with knowledge about diversity and acceptance and with tools to help themselves and/or other kids in future.
