Legal writing is an integral part of the legal practice. Here are some tips to keep in mind!

1. Know your audience: Whether you are writing a research memo, an opinion letter or a brief, you will need to understand who you are writing or to tailor the document to their needs and legal knowledge.

2. Cut all unnecessary words: Brevity benefits the reader more than verbosity. Make the one or two points that you think will contribute something important and close.

3. Write clearly: Clarity is the fruit of simplicity. Do not presume that your colleagues will- or can- decipher obscure language, idioms or metaphors.

4. Avoid pretentious use of legal language: Excessive use of unnecessarily complex language disrupts the flow of the document. Make your points and ask for your relief in a straightforward manner.

5. Research well: Keep track of developments in the field you are writing about, i.e new legislation and new rulings from governing authorities. This will enable you to write from a throughly informed position.

6. Use a professional tone: Conventional punctuation and capitalisation demonstrate consistent professionalism and must always be used in your writing- including emails!

7. Always proofread: Always proofread one more time than you think is necessary. You never know what you may have missed!

Our philosophy is that the journey of a good lawyer, be it, a litigator, a transactional lawyer, a judge or an arbitrator/mediator begins with exceptional legal training. For this reason, we create a platform for aspiring lawyers to be trained into industry experts, through exposure to our various practice areas.

As part of our Internship (Vaction Work ) Program, the Firm is pleased to be joined by Lushomo Koni, a law student at the The Dickson P**n School of Law King's College London for 2 months.
