'JUSTICE FOR GEORGE FLOYD' AS JURY FINDS DEREK CHAUVIN GUILTY OF MURDER
A US jury has found a former police officer guilty of murder over the death of African-American George Floyd on a Minneapolis street last year.
Derek Chauvin, 45, was filmed kneeling on Mr Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes during his arrest last May.
The widely watched footage sparked worldwide protests against racism and excessive use of force by police.
Chauvin was found guilty on three charges: second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter.
He will remain in custody until he is sentenced and could spend decades in jail.
The 12-member jury took less than a day to reach their verdict, which followed a highly-charged, three-week trial that left Minneapolis on edge.
After both sides presented closing arguments on Monday, the jury was isolated in a hotel with no outside contact so they could deliberate on a verdict, a process known as sequestration.
Jurors had to agree unanimously and were told they could not return home until they had made their decision.
The verdict prompted celebratory scenes outside the court, where several hundred people cheered as it was announced.
The Floyd family's lawyer, Ben Crump, said it marked a "turning point in history" for the US.
"Painfully earned justice has finally arrived," he tweeted. [It] sends a clear message on the need for accountability of law enforcement."
The last 30 minutes of George Floyd's life
President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris called the Floyd family right after the verdict.
Mr Biden was heard saying that "at least now there is some justice".
"We're gonna get a lot more done. This is going to be a first shot at dealing with genuine systemic racism," the president said. [BBC]
TWO PEOPLE SHOT IN UNKNOWN CIRCUMSTANCES – KANGANJA
Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja says the police are investigating the circumstances under which two people were reportedly shot.
In a statement, Kanganja noted that the two were reportedly shot while police was dispersing the unruly crowd that accompanied Hakainde Hichilema with teargas canisters.
“As you may be aware, police summoned the president of the United Party for National Development, (UPND) Mr Hakainde Hichilema to police service headquarters for an interview. Prior to his appearing, police as well as the minister of home affairs had advised people to stay away to avoid break down in law and order. However, this morning as Mr Hichilema was coming to police headquarters, he was being escorted by a huge crowd which was dispersed by police officers from cabinet office area on Independence Avenue, High Court and other notable areas such as Civic Center,” Kanganja stated.
He added that investigations have been instituted and will await results from forensic examinations to ascertain the firearm used.
“In the process of dispersing the unruly crowd using tear smoke canisters, two people were reported to have been shot dead in unknown circumstances which we are yet to establish. Investigations in the shooting have been instituted to establish the circumstances in which the two victims were shot. We shall wait for forensic examinations so as to ascertain what type of firearm was used and the public shall be informed on the findings and way ahead,” he added.
He added that police officers will remain on the ground to monitor the security situation and appealed to members of the public to remain calm during this period and ensure that they do not take the law into their own hands.
