📽🦇 Capturing Nature's Spectacle: Behind the Scenes

Ever wondered what it takes to film the largest mammal migration in the world, the Kasanka Bat migration? It's not your typical 9 to 5 gig!

Typically, crews start their day at the crack of dawn, up and out of camp by 3:30 AM, relying on infrared head torches to minimize disruption to the bats. Crew typically drive to a set location and from there walk into the various hides, ensuring they get into position before the bats return to the forest by dawn.

Another great collaboration with Helping Hands in Snake Safety - hhiss - thanks Marcel for facilitating the mini workshop and for bringing a couple of snakes along! The crew loved it and said it was informative and extremely helpful as they now have a new appreciation and better understanding of snakes and their behaviors etc plus potential life saving information on what to do IF anyone was to be bitten by a venomous snake whilst on location in a remote area. We will be looking to offer this to all of our crews in the future.

We are so grateful to Helping Hands in Snake Safety - hhiss HISS and the incredible work they do in Zambia in educating the population about snakes, but more importantly how as volunteers they will drop everything and assist snake bite victims providing expert medical support and advise to the medical teams treating patients in often very remote locations. AtoZ are delighted to hear that our recent donation of anti-venom was able to save a ladies life after she was bitten by a puff adder 🙏🏼

Snakebite - a success thanks to a donation!!!
Last week HHiSS received 5 vials of PANAF premium antivenom from A To Z Solutions Ltd. Only a few days later we received a call about a serious Puff Adder bite. As there was a problem with the blood clotting mechanism we knew the bite would be deadly. We managed to transport the antivenom to the hospital and there it was administered, following our instructions. A day later the patient was recovering and the full blood count showed there was a significant improvement. This means that she will survive. During the entire process the doctor and HHiSS have been in contact. The patient still has a long way to go, but we hope that she will recover well.

We are very grateful to A To Z Solutions Ltd and especially Anita Barret for their donation of life-saving antivenom. Further we are of course grateful for the cooperation with the doctors at the treating hospital. Finally we are grateful to Perry from African Reptiles and Venom for assisting and confirming the correct line of treatment advise.

We are incredibly proud to have been involved in yet another landmark series and cannot wait to see Planet Earth III, especially the leopard sequences filmed in South Luangwa. You can catch a glimpse of one of the final frames in the trailer where the leopard jumps out of a sausage tree. What an incredible team to work with—not only phenomenal talent but also just all-around fabulous people!

Quite a moment for me today. 10 years ago I'd just finished an MA in Wildlife film with the dream of becoming a Wildlife Cameraman. After years of hard work, uncertainty, persistence and of course a good dose of good fortune I was able to start to get regular work doing the job I love. The original Planet Earth was the series that inspired me and opened my eyes to this goal. Fast forward many years later and the baboons I filmed for Planet Earth III are introducing the world to this landmark series and benchmark of Natural History filming globally. I don't think the 22 year old me would have quite believed it. There are many many people who, at the start of my career 7 years ago, have put their trust in me and taken a punt. There are too many to name but there is so much gratitude there. A particularly big thank you to the producer who got me on board with Planet Earth III @kiricashell1 . It was one of my all time favourite shoots and I can't wait to see the final sequence! BBC Planet Earth III - Coming Soon...

The incredible Kasanka bat gathering is in trouble. Illegal industrial farming in the buffer zone of the National Park is rapidly destroying the forest, the food resource the bats have migrated here to feed on. As critical seed dispersers for numerous species of tree, these bats are key to a healthy ecosystem which supports countless other species including us humans. But their positive impact goes far beyond this one national park. This species of bat migrates so far and wide that they act as a keystone species on a continental level.
